Abstract

A physiological study on Gewang or Tune (Corypha utan Lamk.),a drought resistant and still-wild native palm species in the savanna area of Timor island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT),shows that this species undergoes a sharp fluctuation in her diurnal water potential (Wd).In two different sites, the early morning Wd shows a less negative values (-1,9 bars to -5,40 bars); however in the afternoon, due to environmental stresses, the Wd drastically dropped to between (-9,7 bars and -17,3 bars).Interestingly,Gewang successfully regulates her Wd during the afternoon and along the night as their d went back normal levels, due to quickly recharged of their Vd to less negative values (-2,1 bar to -8,5 bars). The values of d differs between two sites, however they have similar patterns when comes to recharge their WA.This phenomenon is in line with their relative water content (RWC), as shown a fluctuation following the drops and recharge of Vd.This figure indicates that Gewang may develop mechanism of osmotic adjustment to cope with environmental especially water stress, thus proves her ability to lead as a drought resistant and evergreen species.

Abstract

One of the interesting topic in Plant-Water Relations is the synthesis and accumulation of solutes by plant cells and within thosecells. This paper is to make a short review upon this topic. It shows the relationship of water potential components of plant cells (a - total water potential, 0n - osmotic potential and 0p-turgor pressure), in accordance with environmental fluctuations (especially water stress), osmotic regulation (osmotic adjustment) and the role of solute synthesis and accumulation in plant cells when drought develop. Proline (among sugars and organic acids), dominates most of the available reports as both an osmotic constituent/ osmotic agent and a compatible solute. Such a reviewed topic that still less available in Indonesian.

Abstract

Information on the water relations of tropical plant species are less available,. This paper deals with a study of the water relations of tropical forest tree species, Kianak {Castanopsis Accuminatatissima (Bl.) DS}], a habitant of Gunung Halimun Natinal park. The purpose of this study held in October 2001, is to understand the water relation fluctuations of tropical tree species, especially those grown in a stablie ecosystem such as National Park. Parametes meansured are water potential components incluiding total water potentials. Meansurement were conducted by Pressure Chamber. The results shows that Kianak kept their average total water potentila at -0.48 MPa, while their average  osmotic potential were held at -1.54 MPa, thus they retained their average cells/tissues turgor pressure at 1.06 MPa. Diurnal water potentials shows no significant flutuations (-0.47 MPa at 10 am,-0.48 MPa at 1 pm and -0.48 MPa at 3 pm), thus no sign of significant water stress. The value of average water potential at turgor loss pint achieved at -1.92 MPa, indicated a phenomenon of moderate drought resistance species. Based on this results, the discussion emphasize the water relations of tripical forest plants and the important of plant water relations information in the managment of National Parks and other reserved biosphere, where plants as a main components. It is suggested to enlarge such this study (incluiding seasonal fluctuations of plant water relations and covering wider forest species), under the light of Natinal park and other biosphere sities managment.

Abstract

As a region under dry climate, East Nusa Tenggara relatively possesses limited tree species to be used as bioresources by local community for their daily needs. However, some native savanna plant species with great potential has been exploited since long time. So far, Gewang or Tune {Corypha utan Lamk.), a still-wild native palm species were exploited for traditional food, drink and rural industry.A preliminary study was done to assess the potential of this palm species as source for developing new food, and drink, and raw material for alcohol industry. The chemical content of its product (including starch and other derivates such as sugar and traditional alcoholic drink), are potentially promising for further source as new food, drink and alcohol industries. But overexploited action against Gewang, palem/ palm, Corypha utan Lamk., potensi/ potential, makanan dan minuman baru/ new food and drink, industri alkohol/ alcohol industry.this plant in its wild status, need further urgent steps to be developed in plots as a crop plant; whilen the future, these plots may be offered as assets for carbon emission (Kyoto Protocol) in global climate change through CDM(Clean Development Mechanism) programs.
