Abstract

The furniture industry in Tunjungsekar Subdistrict has become one of the leading industrial centers in Malang City, successfully boosting the local economy by employing 90 percent of the workforce. However, this industry faces productivity challenges due to an ergonomically unfavorable work environment. Therefore, practical actions and in-depth analysis are needed to improve the work environment issues. This study aims to identify hazards and assess risks associated with the work of wood carving artisans in Tunjungsekar, Malang City, using the HIRADC (Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Determining Control) method. Identification was carried out through direct observation and interviews with artisans, followed by analyzing hazards and risks at each stage of work using the HIRADC method with a 5 multiple 5 matrix. This research design uses a descriptive quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The identification and analysis results showed 33 potential hazards that could lead to 59 risks across all work stages. These 59 risks were categorized into low, medium, and high based on the potential hazard level and the extent of exposure. Several control recommendations were proposed based on the risk assessment results, which can be implemented to reduce or eliminate the risks experienced by the wood carving artisans in Tunjungsekar, Malang City.

Abstract

Body position and posture are important components in carrying out activities because poor posture and other non-ergonomic elements will interfere with the focus and accuracy of workers which have an impact on production results. Based on observations and interviews with practitioners in the UM Mechanical Engineering Faculty Workshop, there are symptoms and feelings of fatigue in the body when carrying out practicum due to the duration of work for 4 hours and the target achievement of tasks that must be completed. Therefore, this assessment aims to provide an overview of student work postures that increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. The methods used in this observation and measurement were the Ovako Work Posture Analysis System (OWAS) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA). The results of the OWAS score analysis showed a value of 2 in postures 1 and 2 where this attitude is harmful to the musculoskeletal system, so it needs improvement in the future, and a value of 1 in posture 3 where this attitude does not need improvement. Meanwhile, the results of the RULA score analysis showed a value of 6 high categories in postures 1 and 2 which interpret further investigation, immediate changes, as well as a value of 4 medium categories in posture 3 which can interpret further investigation, changes may be needed. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a need to improve work postures by practitioners on tuning machines by changing work positions to ergonomic, stretching periodically, and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Abstract

Occupational Diseases (PAK) in the form of pain complaints in the skeletal system that cause the work process are called Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). PT. PLN Yantek workers are at risk of experiencing MSDs complaints because the work is done manually and the work posture is less ergonomic. This study aimed to analyze the effect of implementing full-body stretch and digital-based manual handling education and to assess its effectiveness on MSDs. The study used a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 26 Yantek workers. The intervention was given at 10 meetings, MSDs complaints were measured using the Nordic Body Map questionnaire and analyzed using a paired sample t-test with a significance of α = 0.005. The study's results on the full body stretch variable and digital-based manual handling education in the experimental group showed a p-value of 0.000, which means there are differences in MSDs complaints before and after the intervention. The full-body stretch intervention results showed a mean difference of 13.27, while the digital-based manual handling education intervention showed a mean difference of 10.58. Therefore, both interventions have the same effect in reducing MSDs complaints, but whole-body stretching showed greater effectiveness. Keywords: musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), full body stretching, digital-based manual handling education
