Abstract

Abstract

This article was initially triggered by the use of ‘plays on words’ found in enterprise naming around Yogyakarta. Based on that phenomenon, this article focused on approaches and motivations of enterprises naming using plays on words, influences of foreign languages used as naming models, and their semiotic interpretations. The data were collected were in the forms of enterprise names suspected to have been created as plays on words by observing enterprises’ billboards and placards around Yogyakarta. The data were also gained by interviewing several enterprise owners to reveal the motivations underlying the use of plays on words. The collected data were analyzed to unveil the closest pronunciations, meanings, and spelling of the names of enterprises influenced by various context, such as the products yielded, services offered, environments, location of enterprises, etc. This article found that naming practices involve several approaches, i.e., spelling deviations, homo phonic and nearly homo phonic pairing, spelling permutations, contractions, and word-to-word translation. There were at least six foreign languages used as models, namely English, French, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Arabic. Two main motivations were identified for these naming practices: to create jokes and to lend beauty. From a semiotic viewpoint, these phenomena constitute struggles of the dominated group, whose language is socially less prestigious, against the dominant group, whose language is considered more prestigious. It implies that using plays on words strategy in naming enterprises can be seen as a branding strategy to generate jokes or fun names and to lend beauty which in the end impact in persuading target market to visit their business enterprises.

Abstract

This research was initially prompted by the language used in Instagram to address mental issues in America. American society tends to express the psychological or mental states and experiences on social media, particularly Instagram. Hence, dealing with psychological expressions, this research deployed the analysis of expressive speech acts aimed at identifying the types of expressive speech acts and how they were delivered in communication -strategies. The data were taken from @gemmacorrell’s selected comment section. The analysis resulted in the finding of 7 out of 12 types of expressive speech acts utilization with the most usage order was compliment (39), lament (11), thank (7), congratulate (1), deplore (1), protest (1), and welcome (1). Further, most utterances denoted explicit, direct, and literal strategies without covering implied meanings. Regarding social dimensions, this research found that American society tended to share their problems with unknown virtual relatives, as it can be a signal that ‘real’ humanity is declining to be replaced by ‘virtual’ humanity. It is such an irony because in real life, people seem not to care about each other but in digital reality, they support each other. Hence, the researchers motivate scholars worldwide to initiate advanced studies on the phenomenon of language, social media, digital society, and mental health issues.

Abstract

This research was based on the author's concern when he saw that postgraduate student, especially linguistics programs, did not use standard language varieties when corresponding via email. The variety of language used tends to be non-formal and like written spoken language. Departing from this situation, through this research the author aims to trace the syntactic errors in language of postgraduate linguistics program students and identify representations of logical thinking based on this language behavior. This research was studied qualitatively by analyzing data in the form of sentences collected from the contents of email messages from graduate students in linguistics programs. A total of fifteen data were analyzed and various syntactic errors were found which included errors in sentence structure, word use, punctuation use, phrase use and clause use. Word errors rank at the top in this research. The results of this research have implications for the evaluation of the learning process and language learning in higher education in particular, so that students are more sensitive to simple syntactic elements so that simple syntactic errors can be avoided.
