Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of Wagner Group as a private military company in the Russia-Ukraine conflict which is getting deteriorating and has led to a greater conflict escalation. It uses a qualitative approach with an analytical descriptive method. Data was collected through literature review and analyzed through several stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Data reduction is done by reviewing the collected data to be selected according to research topic. Furthermore, data presentation stage was carried out in form of a narrative. Finally, conclusion is drawn based on elaboration of concept of private military companies and theory of principal–agent. According to research result, it indicates that there is an increase in the intensity of the Russia-Ukraine conflict due to the interference of the Wagner Group. This proves that the principal-agent relationship between Russia and Wagner Group suffers from agency slack. As a consequence, it results in a negative reciprocal relationship, which causes the escalation of conflict to be maintained and provides its own benefits for Wagner Group.

The role of Japanese multinational corporations is analyzed using a qualitative approach with an analytical descriptive method. Data collection related to role of Japanese multinational corporations was obtained through literature studies and analyzed through several stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data reduction was carried out by reviewing data collected to be selected in accordance with analysis of role of Japanese multinational corporations. Furthermore, data analysis was carried out in form of narratives. Finally, conclusion drawing is conducted based on elaboration of concept of interest group and concept of typology of multinational corporations’ power to analyze role of Japanese multinational corporations. Based on results of research, role of Japanese multinational corporations in influencing amendments to Foreign Labor Immigration Act is carried out through use of their power capacities, namely instrumental power, structural power, and discursive power. Instrumental power is exercised through Keidanren’s influence by means of political lobbying, advocacy, consultation, and use of membership networks to create collective pressure on Japanese government. Meanwhile, structural power is exercised through centrality of multinational corporations in Japan’s economic development, resulting in government’s dependence on their investments and innovations and thus changing foreign labor immigration policies. Finally, discursive power is exercised through Keidanren’s influence in constructing discourse of foreign labor immigration as a solution to shrinking workforce due to aging population.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the factors influencing Lockheed Martin’s rejection of the sale of the F-35 JSF Fighter Jet to Turkey. The influential factors were examined using a single instrumental-explanatory case study research method. This method provides an in-depth understanding of Lockheed Martin’s decision by analyzing the causal relationships between variables based on the theory of the interests of the home country of multinational corporations and the theory of the nexus of contracts. Data were collected through a literature review and analyzed through several stages, including the selection of themes, topics, and cases; literature reading; formulation of research focus and problems; data collection; data refinement; data processing; data analysis; theoretical dialogue; and conclusion of research results. Based on the findings, Lockheed Martin’s rejection of the sale of the F-35 JSF Fighter Jet to Turkey was influenced by United States national security factors, compliance with the CAATSA sanctions regime, and reputational risk threats.

Abstract

Globalization of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a very rapid contagion effect between regions around the world and has created a multidimensional crisis in European Union countries, so an interregionalism approach is needed. This study aims to analyze the typology of European Union interregionalism in response to the contagion of Covid-19 pandemic in Europe. By using analytical descriptive methods combined with Mathew Doidge’s theory of interregionalism, Heiner Hänggi’s typological concepts of interregionalism, and data analysis techniques using Miles and Huberman’s models, this study found that European Union adheres to three types of interregionalism, namely group-to-group interregionalism, biregional-transregional interregionalism, and hybrid interregionalism. Group-to-group interregionalism is carried out by building dialogues and partnership cooperations between regions related to economic recovery and capacity building to strengthen the governance of Covid-19 pandemic with ASEAN, African Union, and Mercosur. Meanwhile, biregional-transregional interregionalism is carried out by building dialogues and partnership cooperations between regions related to capacity building to strengthen the governance of the Covid-19 pandemic with ASEM countries. Finally, hybrid interregionalism is carried out by building dialogues and bilateral partnership cooperations related to economic recovery and global health with the United States, China, Japan, Turkey, and Canada. European Union interregionalism in response to contagion effect of Covid-19 pandemic functions as a means of power balancing, collective identity formation, agenda setting, institution building, and rationalizing.

Abstract

Australian news media publishers are facing serious challenges as Google and Facebook emerge as digital platforms in the Australian media industry. They have transformed into the main pillars of media industry as they monopolize distribution and monetization of news content as well as the digital advertising market, thus dominate Australia’s digital market share. Their power and dominance in controlling the flow of information and digital advertising have drawn attention of the Australian government. In response, the Australian government enacted the publisher rights policy through adoption of the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code (NMBC). Google and Facebook reacted strongly against the NMBC and threatened to close the services in Australia. This research aims to explain the reasons behind Australia’s enactment of the publisher rights policy against Google and Facebook. Using the analytical descriptive research methods combined with theory of regulatory mercantilism, concept of digital sovereignty, and concept of intellectual property rights, this study argues that enactment of the publisher rights policy is due to the imbalance of bargaining power between the Australian news media publishers and Google and Facebook. In addition, this policy was enacted due to the reduction in traditional revenue received by the traditional news media publishers as a result of declining advertising revenue, content purchases, and subscriptions that pose a threat to sustainability of Australia’s news media industry. Lastly, the adoption of the publisher rights policy is due to the centralized media power of Google and Facebook which endangers diversity of Australian news media.

This research aims to analyze the ASEAN de-dollarization strategy to reduce dependence on the use of the US dollar in international transactions in Southeast Asia. Finally, conclusion is drawn based on elaboration of theory of regulatory regionalism and regional monetary cooperation. Based on research results, the ASEAN de-dollarization strategy is implemented through several forms, namely regional payment system, regional liquidity sharing, regional exchange rate coordination, and regional financial market development. The regional payment system is implemented by establishing regional payment connectivity and local currency transaction mechanisms. On other hand, regional liquidity sharing is carried out by enforcing foreign exchange swap mechanism. Meanwhile, regional exchange rate coordination is done by establishing ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office, enforcing external balance assessment mechanism, and establishing ASEAN+3 Currency Swap Arrangement mechanism. Finally, development of regional financial markets will be achieved through establishment of ASEAN Capital Market Forum, ASEAN Banking Integration Framework, ASEAN+3 Bond Market Forum, and ASEAN Infrastructure Fund. These strategies are proven to have an impact on reducing dependence on the US dollar
