Abstract

Syringic acid and phenazine possess antibiotic and antifungal properties, and have demonstrated effectiveness in inhibiting the colonization of Ganoderma boninense on oil palm plants. Some bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain G-111-0317, are capable of producing syringic acid and phenazine. In this study, the culture extract of this bacterial strain was obtained from healthy oil palm plants growing in G. boninense-infected areas at Oil Plant Plantation Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra. The strain was cultured on Nutrient Broth (NB) medium, and the resulting culture filtrate was extracted using ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and concentrated under vacuum. The putative compounds were identified by LC-MS, employing syringic acid and phenazine as reference standards. Antifungal activity against G. boninense in vitro was observed in the EtOAc extract obtained after 8 hours and 24 hours of fermentation, with the 8-hour extract demonstrating the highest activity. These compounds hold promising potential as active agents in inhibiting basal stem rot disease in oil palm plants.

Abstract

Stunting is a public health problem that must be taken seriously. Toddlers who experience stunting have a lower level of intelligence, making children more susceptible to disease and in the future may be at risk of decreasing productivity levels. At the end, stunting broadly can inhibit economic growth, increase poverty and widen inequality. Sustainable education is considered to be one way to reduce stunting rates. This service has the aim of increasing public knowledge including adolescents, pregnant women, and Posyandu cadres. Therefore, all of them can recognize stunting, have knowledge to prevent and manage stunting. The material of training is given to 20 participants in 60 minutes. The knowledge level of participants is measured before and after this activity through Pretest and Posttest. The results of the pretest shows that 4 participants have good knowledge, 12 participants had moderate knowledge, and 4 participants had poor knowledge. The level of knowledge increased after the presentation of the material, also through the question and answer session, namely 15 participants had good knowledge, and 5 participants had moderate knowledge. This activity succeeded in increasing public knowledge.

Abstract

This study aimed to isolate Pseudomonas spp. bacteria from the rhizosphere of patchouli plants (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) at three different location, namely Aceh, Purwokerto, and Pasaman, to test their antagonistic ability in suppressing the growth of Fusarium sp., the fungal pathogen causing root rot in patcouli. Isolation using Pseudomonas Isolation Agar (PIA) medium yielded 40 rhizosphere bacterial isolates, consisting of 14 from Aceh, 16 from Purwokerto, and 10 From Pasaman. Macroscopic morphological identification revealed variations in colony characteristics such as cream/clear color, entire/undulate margins, convex elevation, and viscous/butyrous texture. In vitro antagonism tests via dual culture method on PDA medium were observe twice after 7 and 14 days of incubation, showing strong percentage inhibition of radial growth (PIRG >40%) on day 7 (PW1(2): 42,86%, PW1(3): 65,71%, PW2(3): 57,14%, PW3(1): 54,29%, PW5(2): 48,57% and on day 14 (A1(2): 65%, A2(2): 42,5%, A3(1): 47,5%, PW1(3): 50%, PW2(1): 60%, PW2(3): 55%, PW2(4): 52,5%, PW3(1): 62,5%, PW4(2): 42,5%, PW5(2): 52,5%).
