Abstract

Islamophobia is an unfounded fear of Islam and, more accurately, of his adherents i.e. Muslims. This phenomenon has found a fertile terrain in Nigeria given her status as a multi-religious society where Muslims and Christians live together as citizens. Over the years, Islamophobia has taken constitutional, diplomatic, educational, financial, and political dimensions in the country. Any Attempt by Muslims to live in line with their religious codes of conduct and without violating the constitutional provisions is often misconstrued by Christians - their religious counterparts- as a systematic way of Islamizing the country. However, the imaginary fear of Islam/Muslims by Christians is belied by the realities on ground. Against this backdrop, this paper will cast a look at Islamophobia as a concept with a view to highlight its various dimensions in Nigeria. After identifying possible causes of Islamophobia, practicable solutions shall be proffered accordingly. To achieve the objective, both historical and analytical methods shall be employed. Available resources as well as events in the recent past reveal that Islamophobia is not unconnected with misinformation about Islam at the instance of some orientalists. It is also a possible consequence of violent activities of insurgent groups like Boko Haram which proclaim the Islamization agenda to terrorize the entire nation. The paper shall show that this insurgent group is ignorance based and stands condemned by the Muslim authority in the country. As such, the paper suggests adequate knowledge and tolerance as critical tools to curtail the menace of Islamophobia. This will go a long way in achieving mutual tolerance and peaceful co-existence among the adherents of Christianity, Islam, and other religions in Nigeria.

Abstract

Late childhood is accompanied by multifaceted problems in Nigeria. Hence, the challenges cut across all facets of life including spiritual, social and economic aspects. This paper therefore addresses these challenges using the provisions of Islam on the care for aged as a recipe for a way out. It assesses these challenges with the theoretical explanation of the duties of individuals and society to the aged. The paper advocates compliance with the dos and don’ts of Islam as regards the rights of the elderly and recommends the dire need for Nigerian government to introduce policies that would enhance social support to the elderly.

Abstract

Suicide bombing, a tactic employed in the contemporary time during war period, has generated intense debates among contemporary Muslim scholars across the globe as regards its  permissibility in Islamic law. Because of the utmost important nature of issues involved, diverse legal verdicts (fatawa) have been issued by some of these Muslim scholars; some of them oppose the act, while some others accept it as a means of resistance, with both groups premising their positions on specific textual evidences as well as legal principles.  Hence, this study aims at critically examining and analyzing legal verdicts (fatawa) of prominent contemporary Muslim scholars on the permissibility and otherwise of suicide bombing, exploring the jurisprudential underpinnings of their opinions. Utilizing a qualitative research, these verdicts shall be discussed to understand different perspectives of selected scholars on the issue. Also, primary sources employed for this research are Islamic jurisprudence texts, scholarly articles and fatawa collections. Findings reveal divergent opinions among scholars due to the variety in the interpretation of relevant texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Muslim scholars with the moderate perspective, generally condemn suicide bombing, citing Quranic prohibitions on taking innocent lives. But those with the radical perspective accept it, justifying it as a means of resistance. This study highlights the complexities of Islamic jurisprudence on suicide bombing. While divergent opinions exist on the issue, the most preponderant opinion is the outright rejection of suicide bombing in Islamic law. This research emphasizes the need for proper understanding of the texts and context in addressing very sensitive issues like suicide bombing which is associated with extremism.
