Abstract

The presence of a large university and an increase in the number of students have driven significant changes, including shifts in land use, increases in property prices, and changes in patterns of social interaction between students and local residents. This research aims to examine the social, economic, and cultural impacts of studentification and gentrification in the Jatinangor education area. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, field observations, and secondary data analysis, this research explores how these transformations affect Jatinangor's community character and cultural identity. The results show that studentification in Jatinangor not only brings new economic opportunities, but also triggers social challenges for the indigenous population, especially related to economic pressures and cultural changes. This study makes an important contribution to the understanding of the dynamics of gentrification in educational areas and provides policy recommendations to support the balance between educational development and socio-cultural sustainability for local communities.

Abstract

Community sustainability often comes to a halt at the stage of community organizational change, especially in the context of leaders. Further studies on the focus on empowering community organizations need to be strengthened to support sustainable communities. The case study method was used in this study with the research subject of community regeneration of the Sekolah Master Indonesia (SMI) located in Depok. The results of the study show that even though SMI has managed to survive for 24 years, it has not let go of the community's concerns in the sustainability of community leadership. SMI's success in carrying out components that support community sustainability has not covered the chaos when there is a change in leadership. The focus on strengthening the capacity of organizational resources is important to anticipate from the beginning, so that the empowerment of community members is felt thoroughly by every community member who can be the successor in community regeneration.

Abstract

This article examines the social acceptance of female commercial sex workers in prostitution localities. Social acceptance is critical to their integration into the community. The research utilizes structuration theory to analyze the interplay between societal structures and individual agency in shaping community acceptance of these women. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with both community members living near the site and the sex workers themselves. The findings of the study reveal that the social relations between the community and localized prostitution emerge from the ongoing production and reproduction of social practices. These practices are produced by the community with the active participation of commercial sex workers. This social acceptance manifests itself in discursive and practical awareness, leading to the integration of sex workers into the social fabric. However, it's crucial to recognize that social acceptance alone is not enough to guarantee the protection of sex workers' rights. It must be accompanied by concrete efforts to ensure their fundamental rights. These include the right to health, safety, protection from violence and exploitation, and access to services and programs that promote their well-being.
