Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate the idiom in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” album. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of idioms and to describe the meaning of idioms found in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” album. This research was designed to qualitative research. The researcher collected and classified the data in seven types of idioms suggested by O’Dell & McCarthy and after obtaining the data, the researcher analyzed the data by applying data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. The result of this research showed that there were various idioms found in the song lyrics of Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” album such as similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliché, fixed statements and other language. Each of idioms has their own meaning and they were interpreted based on their context in using them. Idioms obviously most found in the song and it really helps people to enrich their vocabularies and expand their understanding about all expressions in English. The researcher suggested to the students to read this thesis to be able know the context of idioms and also interpret the meaning of idioms. Morever, the researcher also suggested to the other researcher to complete the further research better and provide more explanation and also they can use this research as their reference.

Abstract

Finding cohesion and the kinds of lexical cohesion used by Indonesian students in the United States speech on YouTube social media is the goal of this study. The enunciation expressed by student speech produces sentences that contain lexical types by connecting sentence by sentence into one discourse, thus becoming a source of data in this research. After that the data found is analyzed by identification based on the kinds of lexical cohesion obtained from the data source using the theory by Halliday & Hasan, (1976) and also Platridge Brian, (2012) theory. This research discovered using descriptive qualitative methods. To collect the data was carried out using the observation technique. The study findings include a few expressions that combine to create sentences with the various lexical cohesion patterns observed in speech Indonesian students in the United States: 8 data repetition, 1 data synonymy, 4 data meronym, and 2 data collocation. Lexical cohesion is widely used by Indonesian students in the United States in speeches. Lexical cohesion functions to create coherence between the meanings of sentences by selecting vocabulary or lexemes. Lexical cohesion also functions to connect elements in discourse semantically.

Abstract

Language is one of the means of human communication in interacting with one another. Broadly speaking, language has become part of human life, even a basic human need in carrying out their lives. However, along with the development of the era, the use of English is increasingly being rivaled by the use of slang, especially among students, causing some errors in knowing what the meaning of the word is. To avoid things that cause someone's English to speak English correctly, and then use the method to practice, and understand the word classes contained in grammar. But the most important thing is to master as much vocabulary as possible to improve English perfectly. In this study, researchers obtained data sources by interviewing 4th semester students and 2nd semester students through student social media, namely the Teams application which was carried out online. This study focuses on the analysis of the use of interview grammar, which was obtained using a qualitative descriptive method. The form of presentation is done by descriptive presentation in the form of words or sentences that do not have percentages and numbers. Therefore, the researchers analyzed the data errors according to the category of grouping the types of word classes used so that the researchers got 8 data, where the data had errors in the use of the simple present word class, the use of To be, action verb, and perfect tense.
