Abstract

As the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) plays a major role in maintaining the country's diversity. As we know, intolerance among Indonesians has become a major problem for the nation. This research examines how NU constructs and spreads the value of tolerance through its online media, called “NU Online.” The theory of the social construction of reality, written by Berger and Luckmann, is used as a theoretical framework to depict internalization, objectification, and externalization processes in NU Online while constructing and spreading tolerance issues. Data were collected using a qualitative method, interviewing NU Online's members and editorial teams. The results of this study show that NU has an organizational value that regards tolerance as an important aspect of religious life. Moreover, the Islamic value of NU became a behavioral basis for all NU members, including members of NU Online. This value is called Ahlusunnah Waljamaah. Since becoming NU members, they have been internalized by the Ahlusunnah Waljamaah as a core value of the organization. Furthermore, in NU Online, this value spreads to the public through objectification and externalization processes.

Abstract

The 2024 Indonesian vice-presidential debate appears to feature more gimmicks than substantive discussions of the candidates’ visions and missions. This study aims to examine how the vice-presidential candidates reproduce socio-cultural values through their performances during the debate. Using Bourdieu’s theoretical framework of habitus (field, arena, and strategy), this research seeks to explore how the candidates construct the reproduction of socio-cultural values through their habitual practices. The study employs a qualitative method with text analysis as the primary data collection technique. The data analyzed consists of textual transcriptions from the fourth vice-presidential debate, broadcast on the official YouTube channel of the General Elections Commission (KPU) of the Republic of Indonesia, and used voyant.tools to determine dominant words from the comments. The findings indicate that the candidates’ habitus determines the type of socio-cultural reproduction displayed during the debate. The result of this research identified three key patterns: First, Attacking-question gimmicks reinforced dominance and control over debate narratives. Second, Emotional and satirical gimmicks provoked opponents and audiences while diverting attention from substantive content. Third, Youth-oriented gimmicks leveraged humor and relatability to attract younger voters. These performances reproduced a political reality that emphasized style over substance, signaling a shift toward performative politics in which image and symbolism dominate over ideas (knowledge), ethics, wisdom, and maturity in public speaking. This research is also relevant for researchers, political strategists, and media analysts.

Abstract

Digital communication plays a crucial role in organizing international sporting events that require extensive message dissemination and real-time audience engagement. However, the increasing volume of information distributed through social media does not necessarily produce uniform perceptions among audiences. This study aims to analyze the distribution of information and the circulation of netizen perceptions during the 2025 Mandalika MotoGP event through the Instagram account @themandalikagp.This research employs a qualitative approach using virtual observation, semi-structured interviews, and Social Network Analysis (SNA) with NodeXL and SocialBlade tools. Data validity is ensured through peer debriefing. The study involves 28 informants, consisting of followers and non-followers of the @themandalikagp account. The findings reveal that information distribution is highly centralized, following a hub-and-spoke network pattern with the official account acting as the primary information source. This structure effectively generates high audience awareness but does not result in homogeneous perceptions. Instead, netizen perceptions circulate in a heterogeneous and layered manner, forming clusters based on opinion similarity and sentiment (positive, neutral, and negative). The analysis also indicates that while network centralization facilitates rapid dissemination, it limits horizontal interaction among users. This study concludes that digital communication in social media operates beyond linear information transmission, involving dynamic processes of perception formation and meaning construction within networked environments. The novelty of this research lies in integrating information distribution, audience perception, and social network structure into a unified analytical framework. These findings contribute to the development of digital communication theory and provide practical insights for optimizing communication strategies in international sporting events.
