Abstract

Near synonyms are words in a certain language that have the same concept of meaning’ but cannot be used interchangeably in all contexts of use. Corpus data could be used to help understand the differences in the use of near synonymous words. This research aims to understand the distribution patterns of the near synonymous verbs ‘talk’ and ‘speak’ in different types of discourse as well as understand the collocation patterns of the verbs ‘talk’ and ‘speak’ in each discourse to understand the differences in the use of these two synonymous words. This research is a quantitative qualitative research and uses the British National Corpus (XML Edition) as the data source and CQPWeb as the analytical instrument. The  analysis of the distribution and frequency of use of these verbs show that the verb ‘talk’ is more widely used than ‘speak’, but each verb has different grammatical form preferences in each type of discourse. In addition, the collocation pattern shows that the verb ‘talk’ plays more of a role as the main predicator, while the verb ‘speak’ is more often used as an adverbial phrase. These results prove that these two words cannot completely substitute for each other in every context. These results can also be used as a reference in teaching the use of synonymous words in learning English as a second language.

Abstract

First language interference is when a speaker transfers their L1 systems into L2. In Indonesia, vernacular could also cause interference. However, no research has been conducted to analyze the interference of L1 Banyumasan Javanese. This research analyzes English diphthong pronunciation errors due to interference in the Banyumasan Javanese language. This research is descriptive qualitative research, and the participants are ten L1 Banyumasan Javanese junior high school students. The data is participants' pronunciation of English diphthong sounds, and the data collection method is recording. Error analysis (EA) is used to analyze the data. The result showed that the diphthong [aʊ] has the least number of participants that pronounced incorrectly, and diphthong [ɪә], [eә], and [ʊə] are the most difficult for the Banyumasan Javanese speaker participants. The phonological error types are sound omission and substitution. The linguistic factor that caused the error is the difference in the phonological system between the Banyumasan Javanese and English languages. The difference in diphthong inventory caused the participants to substitute the diphthong with a monophthong sound similar to L1 Banyumasan Javanese. In contrast, the difference in the frequency of use of the diphthongs, where Banyumasan Javanese is more dominated by monophthongs, caused the participants to have difficulty in pronouncing complex diphthong sounds and eventually simplified the diphthong by omitting the last vowel of the diphthong. The result of this study could be used to consider phonology as one of the main focuses in English language teaching.

Abstract

The use of a language is governed by several social factors that exist in its speech community. Gender is one of the factors where each gender could have different norms within their speech behavior, including in complimenting. This descriptive-comparative qualitative research aims to understand the strategies and functions of compliments based on gender in English and Indonesian in America's Got Talent and Indonesia's Got Talent 2023. The results of this study show that, regarding frequency, English female judges are more frequent in giving compliments, while in Indonesian, the gender distribution is more balanced. Both genders in both languages used direct and indirect compliment strategies. However, there is a difference in indirect compliment strategies, where in English, it is used evenly by both genders. In contrast, in Indonesia, women use indirect compliments in tiny numbers. Furthermore, the syntax structures and focus of direct compliments in English and Indonesian also exhibit differences. In English, both genders prefer personal pronouns, such as I, she, he, or they, in their compliment structure, though the male judges focused more on non-personal compliments, opposite to the female judges. In Indonesian, both genders avoid using personal pronouns and directly use noun phrases referring to their compliment's subject. Both genders also prefer to utilize a non-personal focus on their compliments. Abstract

Register is a form of language variation that presents a series of new vocabulary and language structures and is used by individuals in certain community groups or certain social situations. One of the communities that produces registers is the social media community. This study aims to understand the form, categorization of meaning, and changes in semantic meaning in the register that appears on TikTok social media, especially in the romance community, or what is known as DatingTok. This study is included in descriptive qualitative research and uses the SBLC method to obtain register data from the DatingTok community from January - March 2025. The results of this study indicate that the register in the community is in the form of words, phrases, and compound words. The meaning of the register is divided into four categories: action-denoting register, relationship-denoting register, individual-denoting register, and activity-denoting register. The register also experiences changes in semantic meaning through broadening, association, and conversion.
