Abstract

Electoral violence is a critical challenge to democratic processes in Nigeria, undermining the credibility and integrity of elections. This paper explores the underlying causes of electoral violence and proposes strategies for its prevention to achieve credible elections. Drawing on Social Identity Theory (SIT), the study highlights how group dynamics and social identities shape behaviour and contribute to conflict during elections. Factors such as political exclusion, economic disparities, and historical grievances are identified as primary drivers of violence. The paper argues for a multifaceted approach to prevention, including fostering inclusive political representation, promoting intergroup dialogue, challenging harmful social norms, and supporting electoral education. Additionally, the role of responsible media, institutional legitimacy, and nonviolent conflict resolution are emphasized. By addressing the root causes and implementing these strategies, Nigeria can enhance the credibility of its elections and ensure a stable and democratic political environment. The study underscores the importance of understanding social dynamics and adopting comprehensive measures to mitigate electoral violence effectively.

Abstract

This study assessed the impact of pro-poor tourism development on poverty alleviation in Imo State, Nigeria. Employing a descriptive survey research design, the study focused on a population of 391 staff members from the Ministry of Tourism in Imo State. Using a census sampling technique, the entire population was studied to ensure comprehensive coverage. Data were collected through a structured instrument titled the Pro-Poor Tourism Development and Poverty Alleviation Questionnaire (PPTDPAQ), which was validated by three subject-matter experts to ensure content relevance and reliability. The collected data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to determine trends and patterns. The findings revealed that tourism development initiatives in Imo State are significantly aligned with pro-poor tourism principles, promoting local employment, enterprise support, and community participation. Moreover, the study established that such initiatives have contributed meaningfully to poverty alleviation among local populations by creating economic opportunities and improving livelihood conditions. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the government implement skill acquisition programmes tailored to tourism-related jobs, thereby enhancing local capacity. Furthermore, it emphasized the need for transparent and equitable distribution of tourism revenues to ensure inclusive and sustainable poverty reduction outcomes.

Abstract

This study examines disciplinary strategies, corruption control, and the performance of the Nigeria Police Force in Owerri Metropolis against the backdrop of growing concerns over indiscipline and misconduct among police officers, which have eroded public trust and undermined effective law enforcement. The objective is to assess how disciplinary measures influence performance, professionalism, and integrity within the Force. Guided by three research objectives, questions, and hypotheses and anchored in Ethics and Reinforcement theories, the study surveyed a population of 850 officers, from which a sample of 272 was selected using the Taro Yamane formula. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analysed using frequency distributions, simple percentages, and chi-square statistical tests. The findings indicate that disciplinary strategies, including the suspension of fraudulent officers, demotion of dishonest officers, and dismissal of untrustworthy officers, significantly enhance the performance of the Nigeria Police Force in Owerri Metropolis by promoting accountability and deterring misconduct. The study concludes that robust, consistently enforced disciplinary measures are critical for strengthening professionalism, integrity, and public confidence in the police. It recommends improved welfare packages to reduce disciplinary infractions and enhance morale, restructuring and sanitizing the police force to foster ethical conduct and public trust, periodic training on human rights, community policing, and conflict resolution, as well as a more rigorous recruitment process to prevent the enlistment of individuals with questionable character.
