Abstract

The Mukbang phenomenon digital content featuring the act of eating large portions has grown increasingly popular on social media and sparked a discourse on consumption ethics within digital culture. This study aims to analyze wasteful practices in Mukbang shows through the lens of Ibn Ajibah’s thought on the concept of “israf” (excess) in Islamic consumption ethics. This study employs a qualitative method using a literature review approach, analyzing the works of Ibn Ajibah, secondary sources on Mukbang, and several examples of Mukbang content analyzed descriptively. This study uses Quranic verses Al-A’raf 31, Al-An’am 141, and Surah Thaha 81 as objects of interpretation regarding the values of “israf”. The results indicate that, according to Ibn Ajibah’s perspective, excessive consumption not based on need or public welfare constitutes wastefulness and poses potential health risks. Furthermore, this study contributes to the development of Islamic consumption ethics in Qur’anic exegesis and emphasizes the importance of re-examining popular consumption practices to ensure they align with Qur’anic values and social responsibility in Islam.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of Open Online Booking (BO) and casual sex among adolescents from the perspective of the Qur'an, Surah Al-Isra': 32, using Fazlur Rahman's Double Movement Hermeneutics approach. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive-analytical approach based on literature study, utilizing primary sources from the Qur'an, interpretations, and related scientific literature. The results show that the prohibition of adultery in Surah Al-Isra': 32 is not only legal but also contains a preventative moral value, namely avoiding anything that leads to adultery. The resulting values include self-control, respect for human dignity, social empathy, and responsibility in relationships. These values are reinforced by Surah An-Nur: 30 of the Qur'an, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining one's perspective and self-respect. This study concludes that the moral values of the Qur'an remain relevant in addressing modern phenomena such as Open Online Booking and casual sex. Fazlur Rahman's Double Movement Hermeneutics approach is able to bridge the text with the context, resulting in a contextual and applicable moral understanding.
