Abstract

Nigeria is one of the countries in Africa that are strategically positioned, and blessed with many rivers. Rivers Niger and Benue are the two major rivers in Nigeria.  Other common ones include River Imo, River Anambra, Kaduna River, and River Ogun. It is discovered that these rivers and their tributaries played significant roles in the growth and development of Nigerian economy under colonial rule. They equally facilitated the European imperialistic activities in the area. Further investigations revealed that the essence of these rivers manifested in the areas of agriculture, industry, trade and commerce, and strategic importance. They essentially, served as tourist centres, fishing areas, means of transport and sources of water for irrigation. This paper argues that without navigable rivers, streams and creeks which served as, among other things, transport routes that linked different parts of Nigerian, the sectors of the country’s economy and the European economic interest could have suffered severe setbacks. The work relied on both primary and secondary sources. Its data were analyzed qualitatively according to contents.

Abstract

The study consciously examined the impact of digital education on the Nigerian economy from 1999 to 2022. It investigated how digital education has transformed the educational landscape, influenced economic growth, and affected the workforce. It was however, discovered that digital education has increased access to quality education, especially in rural areas. To that effect, it improved economic growth by enhancing human capital development and productivity. It has equally transformed the workforce, with increased demand for digital skills. It enabled innovation in the sector of education and provided the need to invest more in the digital infrastructure.  It further revealed that private-public partnership is required to promote both the digital education and economic growth and development in the country. Primary and secondary sources were relied on while its data were analyzed qualitatively, using content analysis and thematic approaches.

Abstract

The study is anchored on Cultural Capital Theory. The theory as developed by Pierre Bourdieu is of the view that cultural events and practices could be convertible into economic capital, generating values and profit. Using qualitative and content analyses Ezza Ezekuna New Yam Festival (Oke Aku) and its Impact on the Colonial Economy of Ebonyi State are examined. This discourse is supported by a primary source material, oral interview, and secondary sources, such as books and journal articles. The research investigated the relationship between the festival and the economy of Ezza and the state at large. It consciously interrogated how the colonial regime influenced the festival and the festival’s influence on the economy. It further examined the place of the festival in socio-cultural preservations, community practices, and political activities. Close observation revealed that the festival defiantly persisted under colonialism, and contributed to the local economy through stimulation of agricultural production, increasing sales, and promotion of cultural heritage which attracted people from different parts of Ebonyi State and beyond. It is further discovered that the festival encouraged community cohesion, profit maximization and income generation. It provided insights for policy makers, cultural administrators, and stakeholders seeking to leverage cultural festival for economic growth and transformation in the area.
