Abstract

The mixed methods approach is a research methodology that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods in a single study to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomena under study. This systematic review, thus, explores the applications, advantages and challenges associated with the utilization of the mixed methods approach through a synthesis of studies published between 2006 and 2023. Hence, the advantages of the mixed methods approach as discussed in this analysis include: comprehensive understanding of the research problem, validation of data through triangulation, flexibility and adaptability during the research process, yields rich and contextualized data, provides both depth and breadth to the study and enhances interpretation of findings. On the other hand, some of the challenges are: the need for additional financial resources and time, the need to possess expertise in both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the challenge of integrating qualitative and quantitative data and the challenge of interpreting the findings. This review, thus, concludes that the integration of both qualitative and quantitative approaches is powerful and enables researchers to tap into the strengths of both approaches (qualitative and quantitative), thereby providing a fuller, more nuanced understanding of the phenomena under study.

Abstract

Educators hope that Israel and the Gaza Strip’s experience during the corona-virus pandemic will make the management of education and learning during the current Israeli-Hamas war a little easier as education systems grapple with trauma amongst teachers and learners, on both sides of the divide. It is not clear how long this situation will last, but it definitely means putting on hold the traditional scheduled educational programmes and progress, in most instances, in favour of online and hybrid make-shift educational programmes with the hope that normalcy returns soon. In times of crisis, ideally, the population of learners affected by the crisis need clear directives and frameworks coupled with caring and sensitive teachers and frequent in-person and hybrid meetings amongst teachers and learners to provide re-assurance and hope. Notably, the main dynamic during war is the learners’ constant fear of attacks to them or their families as uncertainty looms large. This fear leads to anxiety, thereby adversely impacting the learners’ mental well-being. This paper, thus, discusses educational situation with regard to Israel, Gaza and to a limited extent, the USA, in light of the latest Israeli–Hamas conflict that began on October the 7th, 2023, following a Hamas attack on Israeli civilians leading to retaliatory attacks from Israel. Accordingly, the main impacts of the war are disruption of education systems and structures, shift to remote learning, psychological trauma and insecurity and fear amongst learners.

Abstract

Mixed methods research is an approach that draws from the strengths of both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, resulting in richer insights and more robust conclusions. This article, thus, explores the merits, applications and challenges associated the mixed methods approach through a synthesis of studies published between 2006 and 2023. According to this analysis, the advantages of the mixed methods approach include: comprehensive understanding of the research problem, validation of data through triangulation, flexibility and adaptability during the research process, yields rich and contextualized data, provides both depth and breadth to the study and enhances interpretation of findings. On the other hand, some of the challenges are: requires additional financial resources and time, requires one to possess expertise in both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the challenge of integrating qualitative and quantitative data and the challenge of interpreting the findings. This review, thus, concludes that the integration of both qualitative and quantitative approaches is powerful and enables researchers to tap into the strengths of both approaches (qualitative and quantitative), thereby providing a fuller, more nuanced understanding of the phenomena under study

Abstract

The main aim of qualitative research is to explore and provide deeper, comprehensive and detailed description of phenomena rather than quantifying data and testing hypotheses. Notably, qualitative research describes and explains relationships, individual experiences and group norms. The objective of this article is, thus, to explore and describe the essence, types and advantages of qualitative research through a systematic review of related literature. Accordingly, the types/designs under qualitative research are: narrative, grounded theory, phenomenology, case study and ethnography. Moreover, sampling methods under qualitative research are mainly, purposive, criterion, convenience and snowballing. On the other hand, data in qualitative studies are collected by use of interview guides/schedules, focus group discussions and observation (non-participant and participant). Consequently, the advantages of qualitative studies include: flexibility and spontaneity (allows for the adaptation of interview items as the research progresses and need arises), does not require a large study sample, offers the opportunity to meet the respondents, encourages discussion with the participants, allows for the collection and interpretation of non-verbal cues (smiles, frowns, tears) and offers the opportunity to seek clarification, probe further and gain deeper understanding. Notably, the direct involvement of the researcher provides him/her the opportunity to get relevant responses.

Abstract

Knowledge is generally divided into two: Explicit (articulate) and Tacit. This article thus, explores the concept of tacit knowledge and the role that it plays in learning institutions and business organizations.  Evidently, tacit knowledge is linked to knowledge management and as such, the world should utilize it for resilience-building and sustainable development.  Notably, due to its complex nature, acquiring and extracting tacit knowledge is not easy as it is an unspoken, unwritten and hidden in people and ultimately leads to the well-being and success of individuals in society. Accordingly, tacit knowledge is very personalised, contextual and hard to communicate or transfer from one person to another by the process of verbal expression or writing and is generally made up of values, perceptions and beliefs.  It is obtainable and transferrable through direct interaction amongst individuals and their environments. This paper, thus, explores tacit knowledge and assesses its role and significance in the advancement, enhancement and sustenance of learning and performances in business organisations and learning institutions.  Accordingly, approximately 90% of the total knowledge in an organization is held in tacit form, ultimately, impacting the overall output and effectiveness of institutions and organizations.

Abstract

The utilization of artificial intelligence in the education sector has increased gradually over the years. Further inventions in computing and supporting technology have resulted in the creation of robots and chatbots that improve students’ learning experiences from early childhood education all the way to higher education. Artificial intelligence in education, including the use of chatbots, has thus, been incorporated into instruction and administration. Accordingly, artificial intelligence (in the application of chatbot/robots (cobots) is routinely being utilized to teach typical tasks like pronunciation and spelling to children at lower levels of education. Notably, the interest to apply artificial intelligence in education is increasing by the day. Hence, this article delves into the benefits, challenges and disadvantages of utilization of artificial intelligence, and most notably, chatbots (ChatGPT) in education by getting responses from ChatGPT itself. Accordingly, the advantages of artificial intelligence in education include: provision of personalized learning, instant feedback and 24/7 availability amongst others. Hence, it is concluded that even though utilization of artificial intelligence (ChatGPT) can enhance learning, it should never replace human educators as chatbots work best when used in conjunction with human guidance and supervision, ensuring that learners receive a well-rounded and effective education.
