Abstract

This study explored the impact of digital media in transforming communication within Nigeria's socio-political context. By examining the historical progression of communication technologies, it emphasizes how digital media has redefined the way information is shared and received, closed geographical gaps, and empowered marginalized communities. Using a historical research approach, this study examines archival records, government policies, and academic literature to analyze the adoption and integration of digital technologies in Nigeria's media environment. Placing Nigeria's experience within a wider historical and global framework, the study highlights the pivotal role of digital media in advancing democratic processes and redefining the country's socio-political narrative. Nonetheless, challenges such as misinformation, digital illiteracy, and inadequate infrastructure persist. The study concluded that digital media has transformed Nigeria's communication landscape, offering both opportunities for development and areas of concern. The study recommended among others that the government should establish and enforce effective policies to curb the spread of misinformation and disinformation on digital platforms while safeguarding freedom of expression. Efforts should involve partnerships with technology companies to monitor content, support fact-checking initiatives, and run public awareness campaigns to help citizens recognize and avoid false information.

Abstract

Social media platforms have become a routine for many people. The number of active social media users have more than doubled within a couple of years resulting in current record of over one billion. The lack of control of social media have created room for vices, such as fraud, falsehood, sedition, blackmail, pornography, invasion of privacy, and other unacceptable practices. One of the greatest problems affecting social media is that it promotes superficial connection that can end up causing long term emotional and psychological problems. This study was undertaken to determine social media and cyber-crime among Abraka residents. A sample of three hundred (300) respondents were drawn from seven (7) different locations and zones in Abraka, using the simple random sampling technique. The descriptive survey research design was adopted and data was collected from the three hundred (300) questionnaires administered and in-depth interview conducted. Data from questionnaires were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 in order to test the extent to which social media users are aware of the use of social media platforms in the perpetuation of cyber-crime. The results revealed that social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Badoo, Instagram, BBM, etc have been used to perpetuate cyber-crime. On the basis of these findings, the study concluded that social media-aided cyber-crimes have significant effect on its users and that social media, with its positive impact, have brought serious threats to the society. Based on the findings, the study recommends the use of password codes among social media users in order to restrict leakage of vital/relevant information on the internet from social media users to fraudsters.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed communication, offering numerous advantages like enhanced connectivity and swift information exchange. However, it has also introduced complex challenges, particularly concerning cybercrime, including identity theft, cyberbullying, online fraud, and misinformation. This paper employs a literature review approach to examine solutions to social media-related cyber crimes. The study synthesizes existing research and identifies four main areas of intervention: comprehensive legislative frameworks to regulate online activities, digital literacy programs to equip users with knowledge on recognizing and responding to cyber threats, technological advancements for detecting and preventing cyber crimes, and strengthened collaboration between private companies and government agencies. Findings suggest that an integrated approach involving legal measures, education, technology, and cross-sector partnerships is essential to create a safer online environment. This study contributes to a broader understanding of how existing frameworks can be enhanced to address the complex nature of cybercrime on social media platforms.
