Abstract

Numerous studies have investigated the use of videos as a medium for teaching English; however, there remains a significant gap in research on the utilization of local wisdom-based videos, particularly in the Indonesian context. This study examines students’ perceptions of employing Peunajoh-Indatu, a local wisdom-based procedure text video, as a tool to enhance their speaking skills. A quantitative research approach was adopted, with questionnaires serving as the primary data collection instrument. The study involved 25 final-year high school students from SMA Negeri 1 Kutablang. The findings reveal overwhelmingly positive responses from the students, with 80% agreeing that the use of local wisdom-based videos significantly motivated them to improve their speaking abilities. The integration of culturally relevant materials heightened their enthusiasm for learning and practicing speaking. Moreover, the accessibility of the videos allowed students to engage in independent learning by re-watching and practicing outside the classroom, further reinforcing their speaking competence and overall confidence.

Abstract

This study was designed to assess students' writing achievement in the third semester of the Syiah Kuala University Paragraph Writing Course in 2021. This study used a quasi-experimental design. Pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires were employed as the research instruments. The data were analysed quantitatively. The results indicate that the mean score of the post-test for the experimental group (83.52) is higher than that of the control group (68.76).Furthermore, the percentage of questionnaire results showed that 27.3% strongly agree and 51.1% agree that this teaching model motivates students in learning writing. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the writing achievement of students between the experimental and control groups. In other words, the Flipped Classroom Model with Peer Group is an effective teaching model. Hence, the implementation of the Flipped Classroom Model with Peer Group in teaching writing could improve students' learning results and increase students' writing motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' literacy skills in reading fairy tales through the use of the digital application Let's Read for seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Peusangan Selatan. The background of this research is the low literacy ability of students who still rely on conventional teaching methods and have limited access to interactive digital reading materials. This study employs a qualitative descriptive research approach with data collection techniques including observation, documentation, and interviews. The results show that before using the Let's Read digital application, most students had difficulty understanding the content of fairy tales and lacked motivation to read. After utilizing the Let's Read application, there was a positive improvement in students' fairy tale reading abilities in terms of content comprehension, reading interest, and learning motivation. The Let's Read digital application proved effective in providing engaging, easily accessible reading materials aligned with the characteristics of the digital generation. Therefore, the use of digital applications like Let's Read can be a solution to improve students' reading literacy, especially in fairy tale texts, as well as promote the development of critical and creative thinking skills in the current digital era. Keywords: Literasi, membaca dongeng, Let's Read, pembelajaran   digital, siswa SMP.
