Abstract

The Sokoto Jihad was a major Islamic movement in the 19th century West Africa. The Sokoto Jihad brought profound transformations in the social, political and economic spheres of Hausaland and beyond. Some of such changes include the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate, the revival of Islam, and the development of learning and scholarship. In fact, the intellectual development brought by the Jihad was the most important impact of the movement the development of knowledge as valuable machinery in the spread and development of Islam. This paper therefore looks at the attitude of Muslims to the study and utilization of the Sokoto Jihad literature. It is however observed that lack of the knowledge and understanding of Arabic is one of the causes of lack of concern. The maghribi style of writing also led to the weary attitude the Muslims to the study and use of the jihad literature. Not only that, it is also observed in the paper that Muslim youths are addicted to other foreign writings and for that look down upon the works of the jihad leaders. The review of existing literature and interview was adopted as a method in the collection of data. It was also recommended that the states of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara governments should as a matter of fact come in to revive the writings of the Jihad leaders and their followers.

Abstract

Almajiri schools in Nigeria face challenges, including poor sanitation and open defecation. This study assessed the situation of Almajiri schools in Kware Local Government, Sokoto State, Nigeria, regarding open defecation and proffered comparative preventive solutions from Sokoto Caliphate ideals. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 50 Almajiri schools, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. And a historical comparative method was used to link the result with the qualitative information from Sokoto Caliphate literatures or information. The results showed: 1. Poor sanitation: 50% of schools had open defecation, and 20% had scarce toilets. 2. Water scarcity: 50% of schools had no source of water supply. 3. Poor environmental sanitation: 50% of schools had bad environmental sanitation. 4. Hazardous waste management: 46% of schools practiced open dumping, and 28% practiced open burning. The study highlights the need for improved sanitation, water supply, and waste management in Almajiri schools. The Sokoto Caliphate ideals, which emphasize Zakat, seeking for wealth to earn livelihood, cleanliness and hygiene, can provide valuable lessons for preventing open defecation and promoting better sanitation practices.

Abstract

This study examines the roles of Sarakuna in the remnants of the Sokoto Caliphate, focusing on their contributions to Da'awah, industry, economic activities, professional services, security, mosques, schools, health, development projects, marital affairs, and Sharia delivery. The study reveals that Sarakuna play pivotal roles in maintaining peace, security, and tranquility in their domains, and their influence extends to various aspects of life, including education, healthcare, and economic development.

Abstract

Nowadays, invariably health improvement, health education, health benefits are attached to religiosity as confirmed by inexhaustible literatures. This paper reviewed some of the contributions of Sheikh Abdullahi Fodiyo in the public health of 19th century West African Sokoto Caliphate and afterwards in his famous book called "KITAABU NIYYATI FIL' A'AMALIDDUNYAWIYYATI WAL'DDINIYYATI" (A book of intentions in the issues of world and religion). In the examined book, he stressed the importance of cleanliness, ablution, prayer, work/ employment/ wealth, agriculture, and meat production in the development and sustainability of society, let alone the Muslim ummah. He warned against unemployment, lack of personal hygiene, poor production and handling of food/ meat among others. Certainly, the book exhorts benefits to public health especially in Islamic societies. There is need to use religion as health education, and health promotion tool especially in religious societies for better health and interventions.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the level of awareness, interest, and practice about Shehu Usmanu Danfodiyo among some private secondary school students in Gwadabawa, Sokoto State, Nigeria, using a cross-sectional survey. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to provide comprehensive insights into the effectiveness of such educational strategies. The findings revealed that, there is a poor level of knowledge about sokoto Caliphate, which might be due to poor implementation of curriculum or poor attention of students to the Islamic studies or related religious subjects been taught at schools. However, the study also shows that, with proper instruction and teaching, the students can develop a significant degree of awareness about Sheheshu and Sokota Calipahate. Therefore, this work serves as a foundational step for further studies aimed at improving cultural and historical education in the region, ultimately fostering a greater appreciation of local heritage among students.
