Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze rivalrous thinking and its effect towards athletes’ behaviors in Janus Metz’s Borg vs McEnroe (2017). Researcher uses the qualitative descriptive design to examine the problem. The theory applied in this thesis is Adler’s individual psychology and rivalry approaches. The data collected from movie’s English subtitle by reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting relevant data. The results of the study are; first,the rivalrous thinking is raised by the rivals who involve in the rivalry and also the goal which becomes the object that those rivals are fighting over. Second, the rivalrous thinking affects the behaviors of Borg and McEnroe, then it comes to the conclusion in what type of personality they have.

Abstract

The objectives of this study as it is mentioned in the problem statements is to analyze (1) the chaotic conception of good and evil presented in Game of Thrones (TV series), and (2) the conception of good and evil constructed in Game of Thrones. The method used in this research is qualitative approach. The object of this study is several episodes of Game of Thrones from season one to season eight. In collecting data, the techniques applied by the researcher are listening, reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The data analysis method is done by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. As a primary theory for the analysis, the researcher uses study of ethics by Peter Singer and Yaneer Bar-yam’s chaotic concepts. The results of the analysis shows that (1) the series presents chaotic conceptions of good and evil through the complex development of characters in Game of Thrones. (2) the series shows the construction of good and evil conception through four particular issues and cultural systems found in Game of Thrones, which are; how the culture enforce the law, the justice system, slavery, and trial by combat.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyze the cinematographical elements revealed in Sam Mendes' 1917 (2019) movie and the war life in the World War I represented in 1917 (2019). There are two problem statements that the researcher used in this research, first, how do cinematographical elements in One-Shot Technique present war life?? Second, how is war life reflected in the Sam Mendes’ 1917 (2019)?? The researcher used the qualitative method to examine the problem. The theory and approaches that the researcher used is Cinematographical Elements and Semiotic. This study also includes the procedures of collecting data and procedure of analyzing data. The result of this study, first, Cinematographical Elements provide signs of war life, second, Semiotic explained about the war life of soldiers and civilians in Operation Alberich in the era of World War I.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze: (1) The scenes in The End of the F***ing World Series (2017) that depict teenagers’ frustration and anger. The study uses a qualitative method to analyze the film entitled “The End of the F***ing World” as the objective research. The researcher analyzes the data by using semiotics and takes some steps of watching, reading the subtitle, identifying, classifying, and selecting data. Afterward, the step is continued by analyzing data through the process of displaying, explaining, and interpreting the data The result shows that the scenes portrayed teenagers’ frustration and anger caused by their personal, family, and social problems.

Abstract

Dystopian is a dark side reflection of human society. This study aims to investigate the dystopian fear in series “The Silent Sea” (2021) written by Park Eun Kyo. The data were collected from the subtitles and focus on the dystopian fears and the effects on characters that appeared in the series. The present study employs M. Keith Booker’s theory (1994) as its analytical tools. The analysis shows that dystopian issues is always highly related to the issues in real world, even though the setting of time and place for dystopian world is far distant from nowdays society, but the real reference of dystopian issues are concreete and nera-at-hand. The analysis also reveals that in the series citizens lived below moderation and they also contributed to the existence of rebellion. However, because of how strong government impact in dystopian world is, all kind of attempts against the government is impossible to be achieved. This study is expected to provide an alternative analysis and reference to literary works belong to dystopian genre.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze: (1) how the Viking Wolf movie (2022) presents the werewolf myth (2) how blod represents the transformation process of human into werewolf in Viking Wolf movie (2022). The study uses descriptive qualitative method to analyzed and described in descriptive form. In this research, applies Roland Barthes' semiotic theory as a grand theory and relevant source related to werewolf mythology. The object of research is myth of werewolf in the Viking Wolf movie (2022) directed by Stig Svendsen. The primary data used is a movie entitled Viking Wolf (2022) and also used supporting data from journals, books and other. The method of collecting data includes watching and reading, identifying, selecting, and classifying. The method of analyzing the data by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The result of the study : (1) representation of the werewolf myth in Viking Wolf movie (2022), namely, the Vikings' obsession with animal power, the full moon; the culmination of mystical power and unchanged eyes symbolize human identity and human-like werewolf, (2) representation of blood in the transformation process of human into werewolf throught dreams in Viking Wolf movie (2022), namely, half-bloody; sensitive sense and changes habits and blood covers the body; animal instint and physical changes.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyze the form of religious fanaticism of Irish society in 1862 depicted in Sebastian Lelio's The Wonder (2022) and the conflict that occurred between science and religion in the film The Wonder (2022) using the Roland Barthes model semiotic theory. There are two problem statements that the researcher uses in this study, the first is how is religious fanaticism represented in Irish society in 1862 in Sebastian Lelio's The Wonder (2022)? Second, how is conflict between science and religion represented in Sebastian Lelio's The Wonder (2022)? The researcher uses a qualitative method in answering the problem formulation. The theories and approaches used in this study are the semiotic theory of the Roland Barthes model, fanaticism, Christian Fanaticism, and the conflict between science and religion. This research includes data collection procedures and data analysis procedures. This study's results show signs of religious fanaticism caused by church authority and fundamentalism, and conflict between science and religion because of the difference of opinion between rational thought and traditional thought based on religious rituals.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze : (1) The concept of the American Dream reflected in the character Matthew in the Fatherhood (2021) , (2) The social and economi factors influence the journey of Matthew character in achieving the vision of the American Dream in the Fatherhood (2021) film. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the film entitled Fatherhood (2021) directed by Paul Weitz as the objective research. The collecting data of the research method includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The analyzing data of the research method by using displaying, explaining, selecting, and interpreting. The researcher analyzes the data by using theory of popular culture of American Dream. The result of the study : (1) The concept of the American Dream reflected in the character Matthew in the Fatherhood film such as hard work and resilience, family and community support, providing the best education for the childern, happiness and family unity, and courage in facing challenges; (2) The social and economi factors influence the journey of Matthew character in achieving the vision of the American Dream in the Fatherhood film include family and friends support, social stigma, community role, employment status and income, access to education and training.
