Abstract

Oral health status remains a pressing concern in Indonesia, demanding urgent attention. This stems from low public awareness and understanding of the significance of dental care, high treatment costs, and a tendency among dental practitioners to prioritize treatment over prevention. This community service initiative aimed to enhance knowledge, awareness, and promote healthy lifestyle habits among children in Dusun Pakelan, Desa Sumberarum, Moyudan, Sleman, DIY. The implementation method involved five stages: education and practice of Healthy Lifestyle and Behavior (PHBS), counseling and practice of oral health (KESGILUT), distribution of free toothbrushes and toothpaste, and group exercise. The outcomes revealed a 15.17% improvement in children's knowledge, awareness, and skills regarding oral cavity hygiene. Healthy lifestyle behaviors also witnessed an improvement, with an 8.95% increase in knowledge.

Abstract

Oral and dental health is a common health problem experienced by various segments of Indonesian society but is often neglected. Approximately 57.6% of the population experiences oral and dental health problems, but only 10.2% receive treatment from dental professionals and only about 2.8% practice proper tooth brushing. This indicates that improvement in the oral and dental health of the Indonesian people is still needed. The aim of this activity was to improve the oral and dental health of the community. The method used was an educational session using dental stand media as part of the World Oral Health Day 2024 commemoration at SD Muhammadiyah Tamantirto, Yogyakarta. To measure the success of the activity, pre-tests and post-tests were conducted. The results of the activity showed an increase in the knowledge of oral and dental health and the skills of children in oral hygiene through tooth brushing in grade 3 students by 3% and in grade 4 students by 2.7%. The conclusion of this activity is that promotive and preventive dental actions provide significant benefits to the community and after the counseling, there was an increase in understanding of oral and dental health.

Abstract

Indonesian people's awareness of oral health is still relatively low, as evidenced by the number of people who seek dental treatment and check-ups only when experiencing dental problems. Based on this issue, promotive and preventive efforts are needed through oral health education. The oral health status of the people in Dusun Botokan shows that many people do not have their teeth and mouths checked. Therefore, the purpose of this community service activity is to improve the knowledge and healthy behaviors of the people of Dusun Botokan regarding oral health. The method used is education as a promotive and preventive effort, as well as medical services as a curative effort. The success of the activity is seen from the short-term results in the form of an increase in pre-test and post-test scores by 12.74%. Thus, this activity has succeeded in increasing the knowledge of tooth replacement detection and awareness of oral care in the community of Dusun Botokan.
