Abstract

Indonesia has one of the highest number of smokers globally and strengthening smoking cessation services one of the key strategies for an effective tobacco control efforts. The rise of digital health has led to an increase in online applications dedicated for smoking cessation. While these online apps offer users valuable opportunities to improve their health decisions, the sheer number of options can make it difficult to find the most suitable app. There is a lack of scientific or theory driven approaches in conducting a systematic evaluation of the available apps. One way to evaluate the effectiveness of existing these apps is looking at them through the lens of behavioral science. Our study aims to assess app effectiveness using dimensions from the transtheoretical model (TTM), a well-known consumer behavioral model. We examined 122 apps from Android and iOS and found that while most incorporate some consumer-behavior insights, they often neglect other key stages of the behavior change journey. While apps support users ready to quit or maintain their commitment, they lack sufficient resources for those contemplating change. Additionally, many miss key features, such as user forums for social support and professional healthcare interactions, that could enhance the apps’ efficacy.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS cases among women make up more than 30 percent of national incidence every year in Indonesia. Women are disproportionately susceptible due to gender inequality. Access to online information can improve awareness and equip women to identify their risks as a basis to seek medical testing or for those living with the virus to access support and treatment. This study aims to understand the online information landscape about HIV/AIDS in relation to women in Indonesia. Using thematic analysis across 149 online articles, we found the following themes: prevalence (39), symptoms (37), vulnerability (31), awareness programs (20), information about antiretroviral drugs (12) and HIV testing (10), which illustrates a comprehensive coverage of key aspects related to HIV/AIDS among women in Indonesia within online discourse. They highlight a significant focus on epidemiological data, symptomatology, and the specific vulnerabilities women face in contracting and managing HIV/AIDS and efforts to educate the public and promote prevention strategies. Future research should explore how these themes interact with each other and how they influence public perception and healthcare-seeking behaviour among women affected by HIV/AIDS in Indonesia.

Abstract

Childhood and adolescent obesity is an increasingly critical public health challenge in Indonesia. Among its contributing factors, sedentary lifestyle is often overlooked compared to nutritional aspects. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an informational campaign designed to promote active lifestyles as a strategy for obesity prevention among 4th and 5th-grade students in a suburban Jakarta school. The intervention was developed collaboratively with the school community, leveraging social marketing principles to ensure a theory-driven and effective approach. The half-day program included customized information delivery for children, outdoor games, and interactive sessions supported by teachers and staff. The evaluation employed both quantitative and qualitative methods through pre- and post-activity questionnaires, observations, and interviews. Results showed a significant increase in students’ knowledge about the benefits of physical activity, along with improved attitudes and intentions to adopt more active behaviours. Teachers also reported heightened awareness and integration of healthy habits into the school routine. The findings demonstrate that short-term informational interventions can yield meaningful outcomes in raising awareness and initiating behavioral change in children. This research provides a replicable early model for similar urban-fringe settings and highlights the importance of school-based initiatives in addressing childhood obesity.
