Abstract

The Bali Provincial Government collaborates with desa adat (customary village) to enhance their strength and resilience, notably through the enactment of Province of Bali Regulation Number 4 of 2019. However, excessive regulatory impact may diverge from this goal. This study explores the ideological framework shaping interactions between desa adat and the government post-regulation. Using a qualitative methodology, data were collected through literature review, observations, and in-depth interviews. The findings draw on theories of hegemony, ideology, discourse, and the power of knowledge. Hidden ideologies of power, capital, and religion influence these interactions. The regulation's uniform framework on diverse desa adat leads to resistance and inefficiency, reflecting hegemonic control and the use of ideology and knowledge to legitimize power. This article contributes to developing legislation that empowers the desa adat while maintaining their unique characteristics.

Abstract

The Balinese language is the language is only known from Balinese inscriptions dated to 882 – 1050 AD, then evolved to Modern Balinese. This article discusses about Old Balinese phrases and their development to Modern Balinese, i.e. by explaining the structure or word order of the phrases. The Old and Modern Balinese phrases will be analysed by applying a theory of structural linguistic typology which is developed by Greenberg, while the analysis of the internal structure of the phrases uses sub-theory of Government and Binding (GB) which developed by Chomsky and his followers, particularly X-bar theory. The claim of this theory is a phrase always has a head from the same category of a phrase as a whole, and this means that the structure of phrases is always endocentric. Formation role of a phrase is projected from lexicon and in this article the analysis will be presented using a tree diagram. It appears that the Old Balinese and Modern Balinese phrases are endocentric, consisted of noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, and prepositional phrases which their head are nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions. It is interesting to note that in its development (from Old Balinese to Modern Balinese), there are innovations or some changes have taken place from Old Balinese phrases to Modern Balinese phrases. Innovations in word order change consisted of reversal of word order, simplification or reduction, and elaboration. These innovations are internal and regular.

Abstract

Balinese people seem to realize that their existence in this world has a high dependence on nature as a buffer of life. One of the natural elements, especially trees that are very functional in the life of Balinese people, is banyan (beringin). Beringin, which is referred to as the waringin, wandira, and grodha agung, is preserved in almost all customary villages in Bali. Recognizing the importance of banyan trees in Balinese life, this study aims to analyze two problems related to banyan trees from the perspective of their functions and meanings. Qualitative methods are applied and data is analyzed by discourse theory. The results show that banyan trees are used as a means of yadnya ceremonies in Bali and are useful for curing various diseases, both caused by naturalistic (sakala) and personalistic causes (niskala). Symbolically the use of banyan in a pitra yadnya ceremony in Bali is interpreted as a means of purification to improve the quality of the ancestral spirit in the process of unification with the gods.
