Abstract

Community-based waste management is an innovative approach to reducing waste, where communities are actively involved in the collection, separation, and recycling of waste, ultimately creating valuable products from materials previously discarded. This initiative aims to reduce the volume of waste disposed of in landfills, thereby alleviating environmental burdens and preventing pollution. This report focuses on a community-driven waste management program implemented in Sei Tuan Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, which involves educating local farmers on how to manage and recycle waste into usable products. The program highlights the importance of waste management for both environmental sustainability and economic opportunities. Through the active participation of community members, particularly a group of farmers involved in mangrove forest cultivation, the program educates them about types of waste, recycling techniques, and ways to reuse materials such as plastics, glass, and metals, which are often disregarded in daily life. The project aims to raise awareness, reduce pollution, and generate products that benefit the local economy. The findings show that, through this program, community members gained valuable skills in waste recycling and product creation, contributing to environmental conservation and improved livelihoods. The outcomes of this initiative include increased community awareness of proper waste management practices, reduction in pollution, and the creation of job opportunities within the waste management sector. This community-based approach serves as an effective model for sustainable waste management, offering potential solutions to environmental and economic challenges faced by rural communities.
