Abstract

The Haul tradition of Kyai Gede Ceper in Sembungjambu Village, Pekalongan, is an annual religious ritual that persists and has a significant influence on the formation of community morality. This study aims to analyze how the series of haul rituals, cultural symbols, and social practices within it function as a means of tradition based moral education. Using a qualitative approach with observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation, this study is analyzed using Clifford Geertz's symbolic perspective to interpret the symbolic meanings that emerge from ritual practices. Research results show that the haul tradition encompasses two main categories of morality: spiritual morality, manifested through the recitation of khotmil Qur'an, tahlil, and mass haul; and social morality, manifested through socializing, cross-generational participation, and community organizational solidarity. These ritual symbols form webs of meaning that affirm religious identity as well as the social ethics of the community. Furthermore, the strategy of collective involvement of all layers of society keeps haul relevant as a transgenerational educational mechanism that transmits moral values in dailylife.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pesantren-based women's empowerment model at the Sunan Gunung Jati Ba'alawy Islamic Boarding School and examine the strategic role of Ibu Nyai as a central figure in building the spiritual, intellectual, and social independence of female students. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method, through data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The results show that women's empowerment in this Islamic boarding school is implemented through four main pillars, namely: (1) spiritual empowerment through the Al-Qur'an memorization program, which fosters discipline and religious character; (2) intellectual empowerment through the study of classical Islamic texts, which trains critical thinking and reasoning; (3) socio-cultural empowerment through the Maulid Nabi tradition, which builds solidarity and collective leadership; and (4) leadership empowerment through the example set by Ibu Nyai, who combines charismatic, economic, and social responsibility values. This model reflects an alternative form of empowerment based on Islamic values and Islamic boarding school wisdom that is adaptive to the challenges of the times. Pesantren not only serve as religious educational institutions, but also as spaces for social transformation that prepare women to be empowered, independent, Islamic in character, and ready to contribute to sustainable community development.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the integration process of Naqshbandi Sufi teachings with the concept of Level of Consciousness developed by David R. Hawkins, and its impact on the transformation of social relationships at Yayasan Kiblatul Amin Dua (YKAD). This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of community members in applying consciousness values in their daily lives. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The Level of Consciousness theory explains that human consciousness evolves through certain levels, ranging from lower states such as shame, anger, and pride to higher states such as love, peace, and enlightenment. The findings reveal that prior to the integration of the consciousness concept, social relations within YKAD were exclusive, closed, and primarily focused on vertical relationships with God. However, after implementing the LoC framework in spiritual learning, members experienced increased consciousness, evidenced by greater empathy, open communication, and active participation in social activities. This transformation not only strengthened internal community cohesion but also fostered more harmonious family relationships and improved social acceptance from the surrounding society. The study highlights the importance of self-consciousness as a bridge between spirituality and harmonious social life.
