Abstract

This study investigates the impact of social media, specifically Facebook, on strengthening national solidarity in ethnically diverse Afghanistan, using the victory of the Afghanistan national cricket team as a case study. The research employs quantitative content analysis to examine Facebook users' reactions to the cricket team's success against Pakistan. Data was collected from posts on four Facebook pages representing major Afghan ethnic groups: Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, and Uzbek. Guided by Albert Bandura's social learning theory, the analysis reveals that Facebook plays a positive role in fostering national solidarity, as evidenced by consistent support for the cricket team across all ethnic group pages. Notably, peaceful expressions of support outweighed negative comments, indicating a trend towards constructive engagement among users. This research highlights Facebook's potential as a unifying platform in Afghanistan, suggesting that it can transcend ethnic boundaries and enhance national solidarity. Future studies should explore the long-term effects of social media on national unity and consider the implications for policy-making in ethnically diverse societies.

Abstract

This study investigates how international news media framed the role of Bayraktar Akıncı drone in the search operation following the May 2024 helicopter crash that resulted in the death of the president of Iran. Drawing on Entman’s framing theory, the study aims to identify dominant frames and examine how the evaluative tone toward Turkish and Iranian technological capabilities varies across media. Using qualitative content analysis, seven English-language articles from Anadolu Agency, IRNA, Frontline-The-Hindu, Reuters, The Independent UK, Newsweek, and CBS News were coded in MAXQDA. Applying Entman’s four framing functions, the analysis shows that operational–technological framing defined the crash primarily as a logistical and environmental problem solvable through UAV capability (problem definition and treatment recommendation). In contrast, Iranian and select Western outlets reoriented causal attribution by questioning the drone’s effectiveness (causal interpretation) and embedded nationalist or geopolitical evaluations when assessing technological performance (moral evaluation). Variations in tone functioned as indirect geopolitical signaling, transforming crisis reporting into a form of symbolic “drone diplomacy,” where technological performance operated as a proxy for national prestige and strategic positioning. Tonal patterns were closely aligned with geopolitical proximity: Turkish and neutral outlets were largely positive or balanced, whereas Iranian and some Western outlets were largely skeptical or critical. Source usage played a pivotal role in shaping frames, with Turkish and Iranian outlets relying heavily on domestic official statements, reinforcing national narratives.

Abstract

This study examines the intellectual structure and evolving trajectory of Social Responsibility Theory (SRT) within media and journalism studies through a bibliometric analysis of peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2001 and 2025. Drawing on data (n = 54) retrieved from the Scopus database , the analysis employs VOSviewer to map co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence patterns, co-citation relationships, and bibliographic coupling structures. The findings reveal a highly fragmented and weakly connected research landscape, characterized by limited scholarly collaboration, low cross-national citation exchange, and the absence of a cohesive theoretical core. While earlier studies are anchored in normative concerns such as ethics, accountability, and democracy, more recent research reflects a shift toward digital-era issues, including misinformation, social media, and platform governance. However, this thematic expansion appears to be reactive rather than theoretically integrative, with SRT functioning more as a residual normative reference than as a dynamic framework. Overall, the results suggest that SRT occupies an increasingly peripheral position in contemporary media scholarship, raising critical questions about its adaptability to the complexities of the digital communication environment. By providing a systematic mapping of the field, this study contributes to ongoing debates on the relevance and future of normative media theories in a rapidly transforming media ecosystem.
