Abstract

Background: The causes of dental and oral health problems include inappropriate behavioral factors in dental and oral care which are based on knowledge and attitudes towards maintaining dental and oral health. According to the WHO age group, 51.7% of preschool children experience problems with tooth decay, cavities or pain and 17.2% experience tooth loss due to caries which is then removed, only 2.98% receive filling treatment. Objective: To analyze the relationship between maternal knowledge about dental and oral health and the experience of dental caries among toddlers at Posyandu Cambodia 8, Sukmajaya Village, Jombang District, Cilegon City. Method: Cross sectional research design, determining the sample using the Slovin formula, research measuring tools namely questionnaires and def-t examination sheets, and statistical tests using the Spearman correlation test. Results: There is a significant relationship between maternal knowledge and the experience of dental caries (def-t) of toddlers. The average value of mother's knowledge, namely 14.4, is included in the sufficient criteria. And the caries experience of toddlers is 3.4 with Medium Criteria. Conclusion: There is a relationship between maternal knowledge about oral health and the experience of dental caries in toddlers at Posyandu Cambodia 8, Sukmajaya Village, Jombang District, Cilegon City.
