Abstract

This study explores Al-Iklil fi Istinbat al-Tanzil by Jalaluddin al-Suyuti, focusing on his interpretation of criminal verses in the Qur'an. Using a qualitative method based on literature review with content analysis, this study identifies al-Suyuti's textual-normative approach in deriving legal provisions (istinbat) from verses on adultery, theft, false accusations, murder, and armed robbery. His concise interpretation reflects classical Islamic legal principles such as justice, crime prevention, and social protection, but lacks social-historical context. This study argues that although Al-Iklil provides a fundamental normative framework, its application in modern Islamic criminal law requires contextual reinterpretation in line with contemporary legal systems and human rights standards. This work remains relevant as a legal-ethical reference in the corpus of Islamic jurisprudence.

Abstract

This article examines Mahmud al-Alusi’s interpretation of the concept of seeing jinn in Q. al-A‘raf (7): 27 as presented in Ruh al-Ma‘ani, employing Julia Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality. The study is based on the premise that Qur’anic exegesis does not develop autonomously but emerges through complex dialogues with theological discourses, hadith traditions, and earlier exegetical works. Using qualitative library research with a descriptive-analytical approach, this study demonstrates that al-Alusi’s interpretation develops through a dialectical engagement with Mu‘tazili perspectives, authentic Prophetic traditions, reports attributed to Ibn Mas‘ud, and Sunni scholarly positions, particularly those of al-Shafi‘i and al-Baydawi. Through processes of transformation, modification, and discursive conversion, al-Alusi argues that the human inability to see jinn is not absolute but contingent upon the absolute will of God. This study demonstrates the utility of Kristeva’s intertextual framework for reading classical tafsir as a dynamic network of meanings and highlights its relevance for connecting traditional Islamic exegesis with contemporary religious discourse.

Abstract

Abstract This article tries to discuss the views of two contemporary mufassirs, Muhammad Thahir Ibn Ashur and Ismail Haqqi through two different manhaj (adaby and isyari) in their major works, at-Tahrir wa at-Tanwir and Ruh al-Bayan as a form of response to the phenomenon of indigo children who are considered capable of seeing invisible creatures (jinn). The conclusion that results from both interpretations is the same, namely that humans cannot see jinn or subtle beings with the naked eye although there are differences in illat or reasons for the inability of human vision to achieve it. Keywords: Indigo, Jinn, Ibnu Ashur, Ismail Haqqi
