Abstract

Durian peel waste has the potential to be converted into high-value activated carbon through carbonization and chemical activation processes. This study aims to investigate the potential of durian peel–derived activated carbon, activated using HCl, as a material for immobilizing hydroxamic fatty acids. The research process included raw material preparation, carbonization at 500–600 °C, chemical activation with varying HCl concentrations (0.5 M, 1 M, 2 M), and characterization using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The immobilization capacity test was conducted by measuring the amount of hydroxamic fatty acid bound to the activated carbon surface. Results showed that HCl activation reduced the activated carbon yield to 28–31%, but significantly improved its quality. FTIR analysis revealed the appearance of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, while BET analysis demonstrated an increase in surface area from 350 m²/g (non-activated) to 910 m²/g at a concentration of 2 M. SEM observations confirmed the formation of a more regular pore structure, although excessively high concentrations caused surface cracking. Adsorption tests indicated that immobilization capacity increased from 25 mg/g (non-activated) to 80 mg/g at 2 M activation, with optimum conditions achieved at 1 M, providing a balance between surface area, structural stability, and adsorption capacity. This study highlights the potential of durian peel–based activated carbon as a support material for bioactive immobilization, with promising applications in catalysis, pharmaceuticals, and environmentally friendly bioprocesses.

Abstract

The integration of technology and bioeconomy presents a promising theoretical framework for enhancing agricultural productivity in response to global challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and resource depletion. This study offers a conceptual analysis of how technological innovations—including precision agriculture, digital monitoring systems, and biotechnology—can be synergized with bioeconomic principles to optimize input efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Drawing from interdisciplinary literature, the paper explores key theoretical models such as sustainable intensification, circular bioeconomy, and smart farming systems, emphasizing their potential to transform traditional agricultural paradigms. Furthermore, the study examines the economic implications of this integration, highlighting its role in improving farm-level profitability, strengthening rural economies, and supporting policy development for sustainable agriculture. By synthesizing scientific and economic perspectives, this theoretical inquiry contributes to a deeper understanding of how innovation-driven, bio-based strategies can reshape agricultural systems toward greater resilience and sustainability. The findings underscore the importance of continued research and policy alignment to operationalize these concepts in diverse agroecological and socioeconomic contexts.

Abstract

Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan untuk merancang dan mengimplementasikan inovasi kemasan ramah lingkungan bagi produk pangan lokal melalui rangkaian kegiatan terstruktur yang berorientasi pada peningkatan kemampuan UMKM, pemanfaatan bahan yang dapat terurai, serta penerapan prinsip keberlanjutan dalam proses pengemasan. Pelaksanaan program mencakup analisis kebutuhan, pemberian materi mengenai konsep dasar kemasan berkelanjutan, pelatihan pembuatan kemasan berbahan alami, pendampingan dalam perancangan desain, dan pengujian prototipe pada produk pangan lokal. Melalui tahapan ini, peserta memperoleh pemahaman aplikatif mengenai peralihan dari penggunaan plastik konvensional ke arah kemasan yang lebih aman, fungsional, dan memiliki nilai tambah. Hasil kegiatan memperlihatkan bahwa pelaku UMKM mampu menerapkan teknik pembuatan kemasan sederhana menggunakan bahan lokal, menghasilkan prototipe dengan performa yang memadai, dan meningkatkan aspek visual untuk memperkuat strategi pemasaran. Uji penerapan menunjukkan bahwa kemasan ramah lingkungan tidak hanya berfungsi efektif dalam menjaga mutu produk, tetapi juga memberikan dampak positif terhadap persepsi konsumen terhadap kualitas dan komitmen keberlanjutan produk. Selain itu, kegiatan ini meningkatkan kesadaran UMKM mengenai pentingnya praktik pengemasan berkelanjutan serta membuka kemungkinan replikasi program di wilayah lain. Secara umum, program ini berhasil memperkuat kemampuan UMKM dalam menjawab tantangan pasar yang semakin menuntut produk berwawasan lingkungan dan turut mendorong terbentuknya sistem pangan lokal yang lebih berkelanjutan.
