Abstract

Background: Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases among the elderly, requiring long-term treatment adherence to achieve optimal blood pressure control. Poor adherence to antihypertensive therapy can lead to uncontrolled blood pressure and increase the risk of cardiovascular complications. Purpose: To determine the relationship between medication adherence and blood pressure control in elderly patients with hypertension. Method: A quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. A total of 47 respondents were selected using the total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) questionnaire and patient medical records. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square test. Results: The majority of respondents demonstrated moderate to high levels of medication adherence and controlled blood pressure. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between medication adherence and blood pressure control p-value=0.007 (p<0.05). Higher levels of patient adherence to antihypertensive medication were associated with better blood pressure control. Conclusion: Medication adherence plays a crucial role in achieving optimal blood pressure control in elderly patients with hypertension. Increased medication adherence is associated with better blood pressure control.   Keywords: Blood Pressure Control; Elderly; Hypertension; Medication Adherence; MMAS-8.
