Abstract

Introduction: Depression is a mental health disorder commonly found across all age groups, including adolescents. Adolescent depression imposes burdens on individuals, families, and caregivers and may lead to social, educational, occupational, and physical health problems. This study aimed to identify digital educational interventions to reduce depressive symptoms in adolescents. Methods: This study conducted a scoping review, analyzing articles from four academic databases: Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Science Direct. Study selection was guided by the PCC (Population, Concept, Context) framework and followed the PRISMA-ScR reporting standards. Results: A total of 1,787 articles were identified, with 12 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The review indicated that digital educational interventions can be categorized into three main approaches: (1) CBT-based interventions, (2) psychoeducation and self-management programs, and (3) chatbot- or social media–based interventions. Most interventions demonstrated significant reductions in depressive symptoms, anxiety, and improved resilience among adolescents. Several applications also integrated digital screening tools such as PHQ-8 and PHQ-9. Conclusion: Digital nursing interventions delivered through mobile health applications are effective in reducing depressive symptoms among adolescents. These interventions are innovative, scalable, and complement traditional mental health services by providing accessible, interactive, and youth-oriented approaches that address both psychological and physical needs.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension management in the elderly is crucial to prevent complications. The role of the family in healthcare is crucial for the successful management of hypertension in the elderly. Purpose: To develop a family role model based on family-centered nursing for the management of hypertension in the elderly. Method: This exploratory study used a cross-sectional approach. This phase identified cultural and social structural factors, family factors, individual factors, and the family's role in the management of hypertension in the elderly. The study was conducted in Kudus Regency, Central Java Province, from December 2023 to March 2024. The study population was primary caregivers of elderly people who were active smokers and diagnosed with hypertension. The sampling technique used was multistage cluster sampling, with a sample size of 125 respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that had undergone validity and reliability testing. The data were then analyzed descriptively and using SEM-PLS. Results: The role of the family significantly influenced the management of hypertension in the elderly (T-statistic = 8.786). Conclusion: The more optimal the family's role as educator, motivator, and facilitator, the better the management of hypertension in the elderly.   Keywords: Elderly; Family-Centered Nursing; Family Role; Hypertension Management; Model Development. Abstract

The elderly often experience a decline in balance, functional ability, and mobility, increasing their susceptibility to falls and serious injuries. This study aimed to identify commonly used methods for assessing fall risks in the elderly through a literature review. Methods: The review focused on individuals aged >60 years and included studies assessing fall risk factors such as physical weakness and motor reaction time improvement. Cross-sectional studies and full-text journal articles were selected from four databases (ScienceDirect, ProQuest, PubMed, and SAGE Research Methods) covering the period from January 2019 to December 2024. The inclusion criteria involved studies focusing on fall risk factors, while exclusions included COVID-19-related studies, abstracts, reviews, discussion papers, letters to editors, and articles without full texts. Results: A total of 10 journal articles involving 15,274 elderly respondents were reviewed. Demographic data included age, gender, marital status, economic status, environment, weakness, medical history, and fall history. Various assessment methods were identified, with the most frequently used being fall questionnaires (26%), MMSE (17.3%), balance and fall scales (13%), physical activity assessments (8.6%), motor reaction time tests (8.6%), and BMI evaluations (8.6%). The data showed that methods with higher usage percentages are commonly employed to determine fall risks in the elderly. Conclusions: Fall risk assessments utilize diverse methodologies, including physical tests, mental health evaluations, and interviews. Notably, fall risk measurement methods have proven effective in preventing falls in this population.

Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by biological, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that increase vulnerability to depression. Early identification of adolescent depression is challenging due to overlapping symptoms with normal emotional changes, while digital technology provides accessible approaches for depression prevention. This study aimed to develop a depression screening and educational application to prevent depression among adolescents. Methods this study employed an exploratory sequential mixed methods design consisting of three stages: qualitative exploration, mobile application development, and quantitative evaluation. Qualitative data were collected through focus group discussions, while the quantitative phase involved expert feasibility assessment and usability testing using the System Usability Scale (SUS). Results the findings from phase 1 identified four themes of adolescent depressive symptoms: cognitive, affective, behavioral, and motivational, which were used to develop the screening content. Educational needs related to adolescent depression were classified into informational, motivational, and behavioral aspects, forming the educational content. Phase 2 resulted in the development of an android based application integrating depression screening and preventive education. In phase 3, expert assessment indicated that the application prototype content and features were feasible for use, and usability testing among 10 adolescents demonstrated good usability based on SUS evaluation.  Conclusion therefore, the application has the potential to be a user-friendly digital platform for adolescent depression prevention. However, further studies are needed to evaluate its effectiveness in preventing adolescent depression.
