Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to systematically review the effects of stress during pregnancy on maternal and fetal health, with a focus on the physiological, psychological, and socioeconomic dimensions. Research Design and Methodology: A systematic review design was adopted, analyzing peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2023. The review included studies focusing on human subjects that examined various stress-related factors and their impact on pregnancy outcomes. Data was collected through exhaustive searches of electronic databases, followed by thematic analysis and meta-analysis where appropriate. Findings and Discussion: The review reveals significant impacts of prenatal stress on maternal and fetal health. Elevated maternal cortisol levels are linked to adverse birth outcomes, such as preterm birth and low birth weight. Prenatal stress also causes structural changes in fetal brain development, leading to long-term cognitive and behavioral issues. Systemic inflammation resulting from chronic stress exacerbates these effects. Socio-economic and cultural disparities further intensify the negative impacts of prenatal stress. Tailored interventions, including culturally competent care and improved access to healthcare, are essential for mitigating these effects. Implications: The study underscores the need for comprehensive stress management programs for pregnant women, policies enhancing healthcare accessibility, and interventions addressing socio-economic stressors. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies and exploring genetic mechanisms to develop more effective interventions. These efforts are crucial for improving maternal and fetal health outcomes globally.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Fe tablet supplementation on increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women at Puskesmas Dahlia Makassar. Research Design and Methodology: The research method employed was a Cross-Sectional Study, with data collection at a single point in time. The study sample consisted of 35 pregnant women, divided based on their compliance with taking iron tablets. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test to determine the significance of the results. Findings and Discussion: The results showed that 91.7% of pregnant women who regularly consumed iron tablets experienced increased hemoglobin levels, while only 27.3% of pregnant women who did not regularly consume iron tablets experienced an increase. This indicates the significant effectiveness of Fe tablet consumption in increasing hemoglobin levels. This finding also suggests that non-compliance and other health factors, such as infection, may affect the outcome of supplementation. Implications: This study has significant value in providing empirical evidence on the importance of adherence to iron supplement consumption and the need for a holistic approach that includes nutrition education and infection control. The originality of this study lies in its focus on pregnant women at Puskesmas Dahlia Makassar, providing local data that is valid for health policy. Limitations of this study include the cross-sectional design, which cannot determine cause-and-effect relationships, and the limited sample size. Further research with a longitudinal design and larger sample is recommended to confirm these findings and explore other factors that influence the effectiveness of iron supplementation.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the role of soy biscuits as supplementary food in reducing the frequency and severity of nausea and vomiting in pregnant women experiencing hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) in health crises. The research explores the nutritional effectiveness of soy biscuits, their acceptability among pregnant women, and their potential as a non-pharmacological intervention in community-based maternal healthcare settings, particularly at TPMB Hj Sitti Hasrah Ibrahim. Research Design and Methodology: This study employs a systematic literature review (SLR) approach, analyzing relevant studies from peer-reviewed journals to assess the impact of protein-based nutritional interventions on HG symptoms. The research synthesizes evidence on dietary strategies, maternal nutrition, and the physiological mechanisms through which soy biscuits alleviate HG symptoms. The review also incorporates empirical data from similar interventions to evaluate their feasibility in low-resource and crisis-affected healthcare settings. Findings and Discussion: The findings indicate that soy biscuits significantly stabilize blood sugar levels, reduce gastric motility disturbances, and improve maternal food tolerance. Compared to high-carbohydrate or high-fat diets, a protein-based nutrition approach is more effective in managing nausea and vomiting in patients with HG. Additionally, soy biscuits are well-tolerated and accepted by pregnant women, making them a practical intervention for managing HG in settings with limited access to pharmacological treatments. Implications: This study offers practical insights for healthcare providers, policymakers, and food manufacturers advocating for nutritional interventions in maternal healthcare programs. Future research should investigate alternative formulations, large-scale implementation, and long-term health outcomes to establish a comprehensive dietary strategy for managing HG.
