Abstract

Test anxiety remains a persistent and alarming phenomenon among university students, particularly in high-stakes academic environments. This study investigates the prevalence and determinants of test anxiety among special education students at the University of Dohuk, Iraq—a population often overlooked in regional educational research. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were gathered from 60 stratified participants using the Al-Ghadi Exam Anxiety Scale, covering cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and physiological dimensions. Results revealed significantly above-average levels of test anxiety (mean = 91.85), with no statistically significant differences based on gender or academic year. These findings challenge commonly held assumptions about demographic variation in anxiety and underscore the systemic, non-discriminatory nature of the issue. Contributing to both theory and practice, this study highlights that test anxiety in this context stems not only from personal psychological factors but also from structural rigidities in assessment and lack of institutional support. The study calls for culturally sensitive, curriculum-integrated interventions that address students' emotional well-being holistically. By identifying anxiety as a widespread and consistent educational barrier, especially in underrepresented regions like Kurdistan, this research advocates for evidence-based reforms to foster resilience, equity, and academic success in special education programs.

Abstract

TBody image dissatisfaction and increasing interest in cosmetic procedures present significant psychosocial challenges among contemporary university students. This study examined body image satisfaction levels, areas of physical dissatisfaction, and attitudes toward plastic surgery among University of Zakho students. A descriptive survey approach collected data from 49 students (28 males, 21 females) using a validated 10-item questionnaire measuring satisfaction and attitudes. Analysis revealed hierarchical patterns of body dissatisfaction, with the nose being most dissatisfying facial feature (91.8% reported some facial dissatisfaction), followed by hair. The chest area generated highest body dissatisfaction (80% of those reporting body issues), followed by abdomen/buttocks. Students strongly perceived increased prevalence of cosmetic procedures (67.3% agreed "to a large extent") and acknowledged significant media influence (69.4%). While recognizing plastic surgery as necessary for others (particularly women), 65.3% expressed unwillingness to pursue such interventions personally, even if cost-free. Statistical analyses found no significant differences in attitudes based on gender or age variables. Findings suggest educational institutions should implement body image programs while regulatory frameworks ensure plastic surgeries address genuine needs rather than reinforcing unrealistic standards.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the psychological needs of substance abusers in Duhok City, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, using a mixed-methods approach to analyze 47 incarcerated individuals in the adult male and female reformatory of Duhok, and also collected official records from 2018 to 2024 related to substance convictions and individuals who visit health sectors with the intention of treatment. The assessment tools contained six psychological domains through semi-structured questionnaires to be analyzed for measuring the psychological needs. Participants reported significantly lower levels of psychological needs than expected (39.543 vs. 41.5, p < 0.05), with self-esteem being significantly affected and competence being less affected. Males reported stronger social bonds than females. Quantitative analysis revealed significant increases in substance-related convictions: adult males increased from 40 (2018) to 494 (2022) and 228 (from Jan to Jul 2024), totaling 1,830 convictions. The number of females who were convicted due to drugs is 138, while juvenile males recorded are 122, among 11–17-year-olds who are trafficking and consuming drugs. Treatment pathways have shown a shift from public to private health care. Azadi Hospital's cases have decreased from 160 (2019) to 90 in 2023 and only 20 (from Jan to Jul 2024), while private clinics treated over 1,000 patients annually. These findings highlight the urgent need for comprehensive psychological interventions that address low self-esteem, gender-specific programs, fill the psychological needs, and improve access to healthcare to address the region's worsening substance abuse crisis.
