Abstract

This research aims to undertake a critical analysis of the juridical status of studying philosophy in Islam, with particular emphasis on Ibn Rushd’s perspective as presented in the aforementioned treatise. The methodology employed is qualitative, based on a library-research approach. The primary source is the text of Fashl al-Maqāl itself, supplemented by secondary materials including books, articles, journal publications, and other pertinent documents. The findings of this investigation yield two principal conclusions. First, the study of philosophy is recommended and even incumbent upon those who satisfy two principal conditions: intellectual aptitude and moral integrity consistent with sharʿi (Islamic legal) notions of justice. Second, the prohibition of philosophical inquiry applies to those lacking sufficient rational capacity and ethical standing. Consequently, the wholesale rejection of philosophy is not only unfounded but may also impede the intellectual development intrinsic to the Islamic scholarly tradition.

Abstract

Studi ini menekankan pentingnya memahami peran sosial Masjid Menara Kudus dalam budaya Jawa lokal, dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi agama Emile Durkheim sebagai kerangka kerja. Hal ini disebabkan oleh kurangnya studi yang menghubungkan lembaga keagamaan, seperti masjid, dengan teori sosiologi klasik dalam konteks Indonesia. Masjid Menara Kudus berfungsi lebih dari sekadar tempat ibadah; masjid juga merupakan pusat kegiatan sosial dan budaya, serta simbol integrasi Islam dan tradisi Jawa. Oleh karena itu, studi ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana masjid merepresentasikan simbol-simbol kolektif dan memelihara kohesi sosial melalui ritual dan tradisi keagamaan. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan memanfaatkan metode riset kepustakaan untuk menelusuri data dari sumber primer dan sekunder yang relevan. Hasilnya mengungkapkan dua kesimpulan utama. Pertama, Masjid Menara Kudus menjalankan fungsi simbolis dan integratif yang dijelaskan Durkheim dalam teorinya tentang fungsi sosial agama. Fungsi-fungsi ini memperkuat kesadaran kolektif melalui ritual-ritual seperti haul, ziarah, tahlilan, dan pengajian. Kedua, masjid telah menjadi institusi adaptif yang menjaga batas-batas antara yang sakral dan yang profan, sekaligus merespons perubahan masyarakat. Dengan demikian, masjid bukan sekadar representasi nilai-nilai Islam normatif, melainkan juga ruang sosial yang hidup, yang menyatukan agama dan budaya lokal secara harmonis dan fungsional.

Abstract

The Menara Kudus Mosque is a historical site that represents the acculturation of Javanese and Islamic culture through its architecture, symbols, and religious practices within it. This study aims to examine the preservation of Islamic-Javanese values and symbols embodied in the religious space of the Menara Kudus Mosque through the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu. The research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, utilizing observation, in-depth interviews, and literature study. The findings reveal that the Menara Kudus Mosque is not merely a place of worship, but also a socially meaningful space, where the transmission of Islamic-Javanese values takes place through collective rituals, historical narratives, and everyday practices that are repetitive yet symbolically charged. The cultural and symbolic capital contained in elements such as the temple-like tower, the khoul tradition, the prohibition of slaughtering cows, and the pilgrimage to the tomb of Sunan Kudus, demonstrates a form of legitimized power that is socially institutionalized and culturally inherited. In this context, the mosque functions as a field of value preservation, where Islam is not presented in an exclusive form but is intertwined with local structures of meaning that have been internalized within the community’s habitus. This study recommends that local religious spaces be reflectively read as living social texts, which not only preserve tradition but also shape religious consciousness and cultural identity in ways that remain relevant in addressing contemporary challenges.
