Abstract

Reputation is crucial especially public figures and celebrities. For celebrities, reputation differentiates them from others. It attracts the public to idolize these celebrities. However, reputation can be damaged when a celebrity experiences a crisis. This research focuses on the image restoration of Kim Soo Hyun, whose reputation is currently declining due to a dating scandal with another South Korean celebrity, Kim Sae Ron. This crisis is widely discussed among K-pop fans. It has become a focus in the context of crisis management with intense and massive information dissemination. This study uses a qualitative content analysis method based on Instagram content @panncafe regarding the crisis experienced by Kim Soo Hyun in March 2024 - May 2025. Instagram @panncafe was chosen as Korean entertainment agencies tend to provide statements through the press directly. The analysis is based on Benoit's image repair theory and crisis communication strategies. The results of this study found that Kim Soo Hyun and his agency used the strategies of denial, evading responsibility, reducing offensiveness, and mortification to repair their reputation. Kim Soo Hyun and his agency provided a consistent and active response to every information regarding the crisis. There is a pattern of changing responses from Kim Soo Hyun and his agency, namely tending to quickly deny every allegation. Nevertheless, they are admitting some of the information conveyed after rechecking. This crisis has a negative impact on the reputation of Kim Soo Hyun and his agency as they appear to have no standing in this case. ABSTRAK Reputasi merupakan hal yang penting bagi setiap individu, terutama tokoh public dan selebriti. Bagi para selebriti, reputasi menjadi pembeda antara dirinya dengan orang lain. Ini menjadi daya tarik bagi masyarakat sehingga dapat mengidolakan selebriti dimaksud. Namun, reputasi ini bisa rusak terutama ketika selebriti mengalami krisis. Penelitian ini fokus pada perbaikan reputasi selebriti yaitu Kim Soo Hyun, yang merupakan selebriti yang sedang mengalami penurunan reputasi akibat skandal dating dengan selebriti Korea Selatan lainnya yaitu Kim Sae Ron. Krisis ini banyak dibicarakan di kalangan penggemar Kpop, serta menjadi sorotan dalam konteks penanganan krisis dengan penyebaran informasi yang intens dan massif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis isi kualitatif berdasarkan konten Instagram @panncafe mengenai krisis yang dialami oleh Kim Soo Hyun pada bulan Maret 2024 – Mei 2025. Instagram @panncafe dipilih karena menjadi sumber informasi berita entertainment Korea Selatan. Hal ini dikarenakan agensi hiburan Korea cenderung memberikan pernyataan melalui pers secara langsung. Analisis didasarkan pada teori perbaikan citra oleh Benoit serta strategi komunikasi krisis. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Kim Soo Hyun dan agensinya menggunakan strategi denial, evading responsibility, reducing offensiveness, dan mortification untuk memperbaiki reputasinya. Kim Soo Hyun dan agensinya memberikan respons yang konsisten terhadap setiap informasi yang disebarkan mengenai krisis. Terdapat pola respons yang berubah – ubah dari Kim Soo Hyun dan agensinya, yaitu cenderung cepat membantah setiap dugaan. Namun pada akhirnya mengakui sebagian dari informasi yang disampaikan setelah melakukan pengecekan kembali. Hal ini justru berdampak negatif pada reputasi Kim Soo Hyun dan agensi dimana mereka terkesan tidak memiliki standing position dalam kasus ini.

Abstract

The task of writing papers by students has become part of the learning process at the college level. Writing is an aspect that is required of students, but in reality, they do not understand the right way to write scientifically. This can be seen from the collected papers, where the documents in question only contain scientific materials without being accompanied by credible sources. Based on the results of the Focus Group Discussion, it is known that the students do not understand how to find factual information, accurately making citations and references, and they do not understand the structure of writing. Therefore, a training was created to improve students' writing skills. The training was conducted in 4 (four) meetings held in November 2024. The participants in this training were students of the Communication Science Department, Nusa Cendana University. The training results are that students have been able to write scientifically according to the rules, but there are still some shortcomings, such as being less careful in writing foreign terms, and participants are still limited in developing writing in the background section. The theory used to analyze the findings is The Informative Speech by Devito, where this significant change can occur because the resource person can convey the material informatively. In addition, the material presented is also per the needs of the audience. So that in a short time, students can improve and train their abilities according to the suggestions and learning that have been obtained. In conclusion, scientific writing training is useful in building scientific reading and writing habits for students. Scientific writing training can then be followed up by creating similar training for writing thesis proposals and writing journal articles. In addition, training can be provided in the form of video tutorials to help students with scientific writing in class.
