Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form of archetypes in the lyrics of the album song “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry. In this research, the writer analyzes archetypes reflected in the album lyrics of Teenage Dream. In this research, the writer uses the descriptive qualitative method. The data taken are the archetypes used in the album Teenage Dream. The data source is taken from sources on the website in the form of lyrics of the song Last Friday Night (TGIF), Firework, Teenage Dream, California Gurls, Peacock, Circle The Drain, The One That Got Away, and Who Am I Living For?. It can be concluded that in Katy Perry’s songs there are several forms of archetypes that can be categorized. The meaning of archetypes is found in the song Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Most of Katy Perry’s songs represent what really happens in life. Katy Perry uses figurative language and subconsciously in every song lyrics contain archetypes to express a feeling and wants to tell about the teenager’s life in this album. There are many archetypes reflected in every song’s lyrics, such as persona, anima/animus, self, shadow, the innocent youth, the caregiver, the jester, the ruler, the lover, and the magician

Abstract

This study discusses the kinds of bullying that Cassandra experiences, the causes, the effects and how Cassandra overcomes the bullying in Michelle Julianto's The Nerd Can Fight. The research applies descriptive qualitative method and psychological approach. After analyzing The Nerd Can Fight, the writer finds there are some forms of bullying experienced by Cassandra such as slapping, threatened by her friends, spreading rumor, and mocking. There are several underlying causes of the bullying on Cassandra, they include the fact that she is a nerd student, the death of Cassandra's brother, Maddison's taking revenge for Bryant's death, and lack of parental attention. Moreover, the effects of bullying on Cassandra are: having a kind of street fighting obsession, feeling hopeless, feeling upset, anxiety, and easily angry. There are several things that help Cassandra overcome the bullying effects: helping other people that can help Cassandra understand her pain, building self confidence and forgiving everyone who has hurt her. Abstract

Impian Amerika by Kuntowijoyo tells stories of Indonesian immigrants who came to New York City with different reasons and backgrounds. They settle, move, go to school, work, and live in the United States-especially around the New York City area. There are Javanese, Achenese, Batak, Manado, Sundanese, Minangs, Makassarese, and others. There are various reasons why they decide to settle in this city, but the majority is for advancement, prosperity, and freedom. Some continue their education or study in the United States because of the more advanced education system. Some chose to work as long as they can go and settle in United States because the country is more prosperous than Indonesia. Other chose the United States because they want to be free and adventurous. In addition, this novel also presents ethic problems between Indonesians and other citizen due to multidimensional relationships and the daily lives of Indonesians. The purpose of this study is to scrutinize how the American Dream is understood by immigrants, especially immigrants from Indonesia. This work used qualitative research method and data was collected from Kuntowijoyo’s Impian Amerika. The data was analyzed qualitatively using Marxist literary approach. The result of the study shows that Kuntowijoyo’s Impian Americas hows how material success is not automatically followed by spiritual success. As an ethos, the American Dream is able to offer people to come to America to migrate, work and live there forever and promise that anyone can succeed by working hard regardless of family and social background but American dream can also mislead someone or immigrant if he does not have a strong religious and moral basis.

Abstract

This study examines how family environments influence adolescent identity formation as portrayed in Wendelin Van Draanen's novel Flipped (2001). The research focuses on the two central characters, Bryce Loski and Juli Baker, whose contrasting upbringings produce fundamentally different psychological trajectories across the course of the narrative. The study is guided by three research questions: how family environments influence the formation of the characters' personalities and values, what the novel reveals about the psychological impact of family on identity formation during adolescence, and how family dynamics contribute to the characters' emotional maturity and their changing perceptions of one another. This research applies a qualitative descriptive design using a psychological approach to literary analysis. The primary data source is Van Draanen's novel Flipped (2001), and the analysis draws on Erik Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development (1968) and James Marcia's Identity Status Model (1966) as its main analytical frameworks. Textual evidence including narrative descriptions, dialogue, and internal monologue is gathered and analyzed through close reading. The findings demonstrate that family environment is not simply one influence among many in adolescent development but the foundational condition that shapes what kind of identity formation becomes possible. Juli Baker's household, characterized by emotional honesty, parental modeling of genuine values, and open communication, produces an adolescent who develops a strong and self-directed sense of identity. Bryce Loski's household, characterized by social performance, conditional approval, and the reduction of human worth to material appearances, produces an adolescent operating in Identity Foreclosure who must work against his inherited identity before genuine development becomes possible. The study also reveals that the corrective influence of a single significant relational figure, in this case Bryce's grandfather Chet Duncan, is sufficient to open the possibility of genuine identity exploration even within a limiting family environment. The novel's dual narrative structure is itself a literary enactment of the study's central argument: that how an adolescent perceives and narrates the world is a direct product of the family environment that has shaped their developing sense of self.
