Abstract

This study quantitatively investigated the impact of integrating writing tasks, specifically the Idea Web strategy, into EFL reading instruction for Taiwanese senior high school students. The research employed a three-group quasi-experimental design to compare the effectiveness of different reading strategies on students' comprehension. 24 participants were divided into three groups of 8 members each: Reading with Summarizing, Reading with Journalizing, and a control group using a conventional oral discussion strategy. Reading comprehension was measured using pre- and posttests. The quantitative results demonstrated that integrating writing tasks, particularly summarizing and journalizing, led to significant improvements in students' reading comprehension compared to the traditional approach. This suggests that incorporating active writing strategies enhances reading comprehension more effectively than conventional methods in EFL contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate their experiences and attitudes towards various reading strategies following the decrease in EFL students' reading comprehension in Taiwan's senior high schools, as shown in the 2023 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) assessment results. Following an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach, the study favors a qualitative phase that explores students' experiences in the three reading strategies, specifically writing tasks, which facilitate interaction with written texts and foster enhanced learning. The study aims to gain a deeper understanding of how students make sense of and engage with given tasks, including their thoughts, feelings, and subject-related challenges. By investigating these individual perceptions, the research aims to reveal the subtlety of their modes of understanding and pinpoint the elements that favor or inhibit comprehension growth.

Abstract

The study investigates the impact of digital platforms on English purposive communication in the tourism sector. Key findings indicate that digital platforms have changed the communications landscape in terms of the tools to book directly, the scope to market oneself through social media and how efficiency in communications can be increased. These advances also encourage the expansion of the tourism by encouraging competitive customer interaction, easy market access and smooth transactions. The research also highlights some challenges that the tourism businesses face, such as how to handle negative online comments, the demand to keep faster pace of change in the digital world, difficulties related to languages and time zones. The study highlights the strategic role played by the digital platforms and good purposive communication in English language for fostering the growth of tourism.
