Abstract

Urban development can be viewed through the lens of increased socio-economic activities and population mobility flows. Population growth is not solely due to natural increase, but also significantly influenced by migration. Ambon City, the capital of Maluku Province, covers a land area of 359.45 square kilometers, with an additional 17.55 square kilometers of sea area.  The substantial influx of migrants into Ambon City presents various challenges, including population density and imbalances in population distribution.  This necessitates an investigation into the factors driving migration and its impact on urban development. This research aims to determine the extent of population migration to Ambon City using quantitative descriptive analysis.  It analyzes the push and pull factors contributing to migration, utilizing data from population censuses, BPS (Badan Pusat Statistik) data, interviews, and observations to identify migration patterns and their impact on the quality of life for Ambon City residents. The research findings reveal specific details regarding inward migration to Ambon City.  However, Ambon City exhibits high rates of both inward and outward migration within Maluku Province. In 2023, Ambon City recorded the highest inward migration rate in Maluku at 27.06% and the highest outward migration rate at 39.71%. Four variables were identified as push factors driving respondents to migrate to Ambon City, and these same four factors were also identified as reasons for migration.  The pull factors, represented by these four variables, received strong agreement (agree and strongly agree) from respondents. The research results are expected to provide recommendations for effective policies to manage migration and ensure sustainable and inclusive urban development.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to explore and strengthen the role of local communities in preserving the natural tourism site known as "Pohon Sejuta Umat" in Banda District, Central Maluku. This site holds ecological, cultural, and spiritual value, making community involvement vital for its sustainability. The program employed participatory methods including observations, interviews, focus group discussions, and training workshops with community members, traditional leaders, and the local tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis). The findings reveal strong community commitment in conserving the area through regular clean-ups, informational signage based on local wisdom, and collaborative patrols. Capacity-building sessions enhanced community understanding of environmental conservation and introduced digital strategies to promote the site. This initiative underscores the importance of integrating local knowledge and participatory approaches in sustainable tourism development. Empowering local communities ensures that conservation efforts align with both environmental goals and socio-economic benefits.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Pela Gandong culture as social capital in the inter-village relationship between Tihulale and Kailolo from a sociological perspective. Pela Gandong is a form of local wisdom in Maluku society that functions as a value system binding solidarity, trust, and cooperation among communities. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that Pela Gandong plays a significant role as social capital in strengthening social cohesion, minimizing conflicts, and fostering harmonious relationships not only between Tihulale and Kailolo but also among other villages in Maluku, each with its own unique forms of Pela and Gandong ties. Values such as trust, shared norms, and social networks are key elements in sustaining inter-village relationships in Maluku. Furthermore, this cultural system serves as an effective local wisdom-based conflict resolution mechanism within a multicultural society. However, modernization and social change pose challenges to the internalization of these values, particularly among the younger generation. Therefore, efforts to preserve and revitalize Pela Gandong culture are essential to maintain its relevance in contemporary social life. This study emphasizes that Pela Gandong is not merely a cultural tradition but also a strategic social force in strengthening social integration and solidarity in Maluku society.
