Abstract

This study aims to analyze the socio-economic vulnerability of coastal communities in Maluku in facing the impacts of global climate change. The coastal areas of Maluku, where most of the population relies on the traditional fisheries sector, face major challenges due to global warming, sea level rise, and changes in oceanographic parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, and ocean currents. These changes have a significant impact on marine ecosystems, especially coral reefs and fisheries habitats, which ultimately affect the livelihoods and welfare of coastal communities. In addition to ecological challenges, communities also face socio-economic constraints such as low education, limited access to basic services, and weak local institutions. Therefore, ecosystem-based adaptation and mitigation strategies, community empowerment, and strengthening institutional capacity are important to increase the resilience of coastal communities in Maluku to climate change. This study recommends the need for a cross-sectoral collaborative approach and integration of local knowledge in the formulation of sustainable coastal development policies.

Abstract

Kehidupan masyarakat berubah akibat berkurangnya wilayah daratan akibat kenaikan air laut.

Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the impact of global climate change on oceanographic parameters and its threats to marine ecosystems and coastal life in the Maluku region. The study was carried out through a literature review, utilizing scientific publications indexed in several databases such as Google Scholar, Sinta, DOAJ, and Scopus. The findings indicate that climate change has an effect on rising sea temperatures and sea level rise, which causes marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, to bleach and leads to a decline in fish catch yields. Other findings show that other oceanographic parameters, such as pH, water currents, and other elements, also change due to global warming. The livelihoods of local communities are affected by the loss of land area caused by rising sea levels.

Abstract

Ambon Bay is a semi-enclosed coastal system characterized by complex oceanographic dynamics influenced by seasonal variability, tidal processes, and freshwater input from surrounding land areas. This study aims to analyze the vertical stratification patterns of temperature, salinity, and density, as well as the water mass movement in Ambon Bay Inner (ABI) and Ambon Bay Outer (ABO) during May, June, and July. Observations were conducted at several stations representing a transverse section of the bay, and the data were analyzed based on the vertical distribution of physical parameters and seawater density (Sigma-T). The results indicate that temperature, salinity, and density exhibit significant vertical and temporal variations, with the highest values generally occurring in May. Vertically, temperature and salinity tend to be lower in the surface layer and increase with depth, resulting in a corresponding increase in seawater density. The water mass movement pattern shows that circulation in Ambon Bay is largely controlled by tidal forcing, with water masses forming distinct layers of varying thickness at different depths. Density stratification plays a crucial role in regulating vertical mixing processes and controlling water mass dynamics within the bay. These findings provide important insights into the physical characteristics of Ambon Bay and can support sustainable coastal and marine resource management.
