Abstract

Despite the increasing integration of computer-based testing in nursing education, little is known about how student demographic variables influence their intentions to adopt this technology in clinical examinations. This gap in understanding may hinder effective implementation strategies and reduce student acceptance. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether a combination of nursing students’ demographic variables significantly predicts their intention to use computer-based testing (CBT) in clinical examinations; quantify the proportion of variance in students’ intentions to use CBT that is explained by their demographic data; and assess the relative contribution of each demographic variable to students' intentions to adopt CBT in clinical examinations. The study adopted a correlation research design with a population comprising all nursing schools in Osun State. The study purposively selected six nursing schools from the population. While the simple random sampling technique was used to select 20 nursing students from each school, totaling 120 respondents. A self-developed instrument was used to elicit data from the students, with an internal reliability of 0.87 obtained using Cronbach's alpha. The data collected were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The finding showed that the combined demographic variables did not statistically and significantly predict the nursing student’s intentions to adopt CBT in their clinical exams. Only 5.6% of the variance in nursing students’ intention to use CBT in clinical examinations was explained by the combined demographic variables. However, gender significantly predicted the nursing students’ intentions to adopt CBT. It concluded that nursing students’ demographic data were not influencing their intentions to use CBT in clinical examinations. The paper outlined the implications for the study.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBasic Science teachers in Nigerian schools are statistically few which might influence the way the subject is being taught.  Teachers have deployed different techniques or methods to teach Basic Science yet, students’ performance in the subject appeared low. This study examined influence of Basic Science teacher use of Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) on junior secondary school students’ academic performance in Osun State. Four research objectives guided the study. It adopted regression research design. All Basic Science teachers and students constituted population for the study. A sample size of 26 teachers and 307 junior secondary school students were selected using multistage sampling technique. Two instruments validated with reliability coefficient of 0.67 and 0.74 obtained using the split half method were used. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 significant level. Findings of this study revealed that teachers’ characteristics do not statistically significant (F(8,17)=1.227, p= 0.342) predict the teacher’s use of CAI in teaching Basic Science in Osun State schools. It also found no significant variance in the intention to use CAI that predicted teacher characteristics (F(8, 17) = 1.227, p > .001, R² = 0.366). It further showed no teacher characteristics showing statistically significant influence on intention to use CAI in teaching Basic Science. It however found a statistically significant relationship (F(1, 305) = 10.269, p = 0.001) between teachers' intention to use CAI and junior secondary students' academic performance in Basic Science. It concluded that the teacher’s intention to use CAI significantly influence Basic Science students’ performance.Keywords: educational technology; Computer aided instruction; Teacher’s intention to use; Student’s Achievement; academic performance; Basic Science

Abstract

The study determined the attitude and perception of nursing students towards computer-based examination in Osun State.  It also examined nursing students’ examination performances while using CBT and traditional methods. These were with a view to providing empirical information on the attitude and perception of student nurses towards the use of computer-based tests in Osun State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design of the correlation type. The population for the study comprised all schools of nursing in Osun State. Out of this, six nursing schools were randomly selected using 20 nursing students from each school, totaling 120 respondents.  One instrument trial tested, yielding a Cronbach's alpha of 0.87, was used for the study. The data collected were analyzed descriptively and correlationally. The results revealed that the nursing students had a positive attitude towards the use of CBT. It further showed that the students demonstrated high perception towards the use of CBT in their exams.  There was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the average score obtained by the nursing students in CBT and the traditional method. The study concluded that the nursing students had a positive attitude and high perception towards the use of CBT and they preferred the CBT examination to the paper-based test.
