Abstract

This study aims to investigate the correlation between tree growth parameters tree height, stem diameter, and volume and wood fiber length in elite Eucalyptus pellita clones aged 3.5 years in Loa-Kulu District, East Kalimantan. Fifty clones were tested using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with five replications per clone. Growth data were collected through measurements of height and stem diameter, followed by analysis using analysis of variance and Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) for clone ranking. Wood samples were taken from selected clones categorized by fast, medium, and slow growth rates to measure fiber length. The results showed significant genetic variation among clones in growth traits (p < 0.0001), with fast-growing clones exhibiting higher values in height, diameter, and volume compared to other categories. Fiber length values revealed significant differences among clones but not across growth rate categories, and their correlations with growth parameters were low and statistically insignificant. Although not statistically significant, genetic correlation values were in the moderate range, indicating that direct measurement of wood properties remains an important aspect in clone selection. These findings suggest that growth traits and fiber length are controlled by different genetic mechanisms; therefore, clone selection should integrate both aspects to meet the demands of the paper industry. This approach is expected to enhance breeding efficiency and improve the quality of sustainable paper raw materials. Keywords: Clone selection, Eucalyptus pellita, genetic correlation, wood fiber length.

Abstract

The training activity on Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS) tree seedling aimed to enhance the understanding and skills of students from SMA Negeri 9 Samarinda in environmentally friendly seedling techniques. This training was conducted to provide practical knowledge to students regarding seed sowing, seed scarification, and MPTS tree care techniques, which have significant benefits for both the environment and the economy. The methods used in this training included providing educational material on the importance of MPTS trees in supporting environmental sustainability, hands-on practice in seed sowing and scarification, and an environmental campaign through the creation of posters to encourage students to be more aware of reforestation. The results of the training indicated a significant improvement in students' understanding of the importance of reforestation and proper tree seedling techniques. Furthermore, the training successfully fostered awareness and concern for environmental preservation, as reflected in their enthusiasm for hands-on seedling practice and discussions on the long-term benefits of MPTS trees. This program also encouraged students to develop entrepreneurial ideas based on MPTS plants, which could support nature-based economies in the future. Thus, this training is expected to make a tangible contribution to environmental conservation efforts and increase ecological awareness among the younger generation.
