Abstract

Abstract: As it is well known that Indonesia is a country with various types of culture, one of these cultural diversities gave birth to historical buildings as clear evidence that in ancient times, there were historical stories that should be remembered forever. In this regard, the researcher is interested in writing a paper based on field research and research on existing literature to try to answer the role of one of the historical monuments in Sidoarjo City, to be precise, the Candi Pari Monument in Candipari Village, Porong District. Pari Temple is now a tourist attraction inherited from the Majapahit kingdom, where the existence of this temple cannot be separated from the adjacent temple about 500 meters away, namely Sumur Temple. The aspect studied is the relevance of the existence of Pari Temple as one of the cultures in the village and the existence of Falak instruments, such as measuring the direction of the wind. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative because the data analysed is in the form of sentences from interviews with the authorities at the temple, as well as the data collection techniques used by researchers, namely field research, interviews, recorded documentation, and literature studies, by utilising sources. Other written sources include journals, scientific articles, and so on. In this paper, the researcher will present the results of measuring the cardinal directions with a compass, using the location of Pari Temple as the centre point of the measurement. Regarding the relevance of these results, whether this temple faces Mecca in the same way as Borobudur Temple, will be presented in the final results of the writing. Keywords: Pari Temple, Culture, Wind Direction.

Abstract

East Java Province has diverse geographical conditions and several areas with low levels of light pollution, making it a potential location for the construction of an observatory. This study aims to map these potential areas using ArcGIS software. The research is a library research with a qualitative descriptive approach. The data used include light pollution data from the Light Pollution Maps (LPM) website, wind speed and cloud data from the Weather Spark website, elevation data from Google Earth, and topographic data from the Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Data collection was carried out through literature study and then analyzed using a descriptive method to identify areas that meet the criteria for observatory development. The results show that East Java has varied elevation levels and several regions with low light pollution. Based on the analysis, three main locations were identified as potential sites for observatory construction: Bromo National Park in Lumajang Regency, Ijen National Park in Bondowoso Regency, and Meru Betiri National Park in Jember Regency. These three locations meet the ideal criteria for an observatory, such as sufficient elevation, minimal light pollution, sparse settlements, and relatively stable climatic conditions.
