Abstract

Water, energy and food are the most crucial sectors to be developed due to its importance for human life. The availability, accessibility, and quality of those three commodities have to be ensured for the whole people in a region. This research was conducted to study the existence of water, energy and food related sector compare with other sectors in West Java Province by using one of economic base approaches so called Location Quotient (LQ) method. By analysing gross regional domestic products (GRDP) year 2011-2015 at constant 2010 market prices, basic and non-basic sectors have been determined. The results show how the static and dynamic location quotient (SLQ & DLQ) analysis were effective to figure out general situation and characteristic of basic and non-basic sector in this region. This composite approach is expected to assist local government and stakeholders in undertaking preliminary evaluation in particularly water, energy and food sectors evaluation to improve their security. Furthermore, water, energy, and food related sectors mostly in quadrant III and IV, indicating that serious actions have to be taken particularly by local government to improve production of those basic commodities. Integrated measures are expected to maintain their availability in the forthcoming years.

By analyzing gross regional domestic products (GRDP) year 2011-2015 at constant 2010 market prices by industrial origin, basic and non-basic sectors have been determined. The results show that the static and dynamic location quotient (SLQ & DLQ) analysis and competitive cluster chart were effective to figure out general situation and characteristic of basic and non-basic sectors in this region. Additionally, water, energy, and food-related sectors are mostly positioned in quadrant III and IV, indicating that serious actions have to be taken particularly by local government to increase production of those basic commodities. Integrated measures are expected to maintain their availability in the forthcoming years. This composite approach is expected to assist local government and stakeholders in undertaking preliminary evaluation in particular water, energy and food sectors to improve their security.

Abstract

This literature trend analysis focused on the water, energy, and food (WEF) security nexus-related topics that are increasingly discussed in global society, academia, business, and policy. The objective of this study is to examine the trends of scientific publications in this issue using the Scopus Database and Google Scholar during the period of year 2000 to 2019. It was conducted by employing six searching phrases with three selected categories i.e. year of publication, subject area, and type of documents in Scopus search engine (SCO) and one category of year of publication in Google Scholar (GOS). The results indicate the increasing number of research document over time on WEF security topic either in the separated three sectors or in the integration of them in the perspective of nexus. Additionally, the use of different searching phrases which represent both sectoral and integrated approach indicates the perspective changes of scientific community in observing water, energy and food resources. Furthermore, interconnectedness between WEF system and other exogenous factors such as climate, population, forest, industry, and other economic developments have been revealed through the existing studies. All the findings are expected to bring a better insight for the researcher in conducting research on this topic and broaden the scope instead of only WEF system without considering other exogenous factors. Further study on the applicability of the nexus concepts in any level including local context is needed to prove that this concept is not only ‘on paper’ but also can be well[1]implemented to assist policy-makers in managing WEF resources
