Abstract

This study aims to explore the causes and potential solutions to poverty traps experienced by coastal women. Utilizing a systematic literature review method, the research identifies and synthesizes relevant findings from existing studies. The results reveal that the primary drivers of poverty among coastal women include disparities in educational attainment and limited access to economic resources. These constraints, coupled with restricted employment opportunities, contribute to economic dependency on male family members. Such dependency heightens the risk of domestic violence and reinforces the intergenerational transmission of poverty. To address this issue, the study recommends promoting women’s economic empowerment through entrepreneurship training and improved access to financial capital, which may enhance income generation and reduce economic vulnerability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the complex impact of President Donald Trump's "America First" protectionist economic policies on economic growth in the Southeast Asian region through the lens of Economic Realism theory. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analytical design. Data were collected through document studies in the form of official US policy data, ASEAN communiques, World Bank and IMF reports, and other academic literature, which were analyzed thematically based on the Economic Realism framework. The results reveal a dual impact. Trump's policies disrupted global supply chains and increased uncertainty. However, simultaneously, these policies opened up strategic opportunities in the form of trade diversion and investment relocation from China to Southeast Asia. The impact was not homogeneous, with Vietnam emerging as a major beneficiary, while countries with highly open economies experienced a slowdown. In aggregate, the region's economies demonstrated resilience driven by domestic demand and regional integration, leading to accelerated structural transformation. There are significant implications of Trump's policies regarding his role as a catalyst for accelerating economic diversification and building regional economic resilience. Therefore, to ensure sustainable growth, Southeast Asian countries need to continue strengthening regional cooperation and enhancing domestic competitiveness.

Abstract

based Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in South Buru Regency as an archipelagic region of Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative case study approach supported by descriptive quantitative data. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation involving 25 women MSME actors in Labuang Village, Namrole District. The findings reveal that women play a dominant and strategic role not only in production activities, particularly in trade and fisheries, but also in controlling key resources such as finances, production tools, and savings. Financial control emerges as a critical factor in ensuring MSME sustainability. Notably, in the specific context of Labuang Village, patriarchal structures commonly reported as barriers to women’s access and participation do not fully apply. Instead, women demonstrate a high degree of agency in managing both enterprises and household resources. Nevertheless, persistent challenges remain, including limited access to formal financing, which leads to reliance on informal moneylenders, as well as the dual burden arising from domestic responsibilities. This study underscores that empowering women in local resource-based MSMEs is a crucial strategy for fostering inclusive and sustainable economic development in South Buru Regency. Accordingly, this study recommends the formulation of holistic, women-centered policies that encompass inclusive access to capital, managerial and digital skills training, and the strengthening of social networks to further optimize women’s strategic roles in local economic development.

Abstract

This study examines the role of land transportation infrastructure in the economic development of underdeveloped villages in West Seram Regency, with particular attention to household dynamics, gender dimensions, and social capital. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis in three underdeveloped villages in Elpaputih District: Ahiolo Village, Abio Village, and Watui Village. The findings indicate that severely deteriorated road conditions, the absence of public transportation, and high vulnerability to weather-related disruptions have resulted in geographic isolation that reinforces a high-cost economy. High logistics costs, ranging from 14-34% of household income, significantly reduce profit margins, constrain market access, and intensify dependence on subsistence-based economic activities. Further, gendered impacts are evident, as women disproportionately bear the burden of mobility constraints. At the same time, communities demonstrate resilience through gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and local innovations, such as the use of bamboo rafts. However, these adaptive strategies function as a form of “shock absorber” that unintentionally sustains the status quo of infrastructure failure rather than addressing its structural causes. Policy recommendations include accelerating infrastructure improvement through participatory approaches that leverage local social capital, developing multimodal transportation systems integrating land and river transport, and implementing gender-responsive interventions to enhance women’s economic access. This study concludes that without comprehensive structural interventions, these villages are likely to remain trapped in a locked-in subsistence economy.
