Abstract

The digital printing industry currently faces environmental challenges due to the use of synthetic inks containing hazardous chemical compounds. This study aims to optimize the composition of bio-ink based on butterfly pea flower extract (Clitoria ternatea) and gum arabic as an environmentally friendly alternative for cyan ink in inkjet printing applications. The research method used varying concentrations of butterfly pea flower extract (1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) and gum arabic (1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%) with testing parameters of pH, viscosity, and color analysis using the CIE Lab system and Delta E (ΔE) evaluation. The results showed that all formulations produced pH in the range of 5.3-6.6, suitable for inkjet printing applications. Viscosity values ranged from 7.57-9.35 mPa.s, meeting technical standards for inkjet ink (2-10 mPa.s). Color analysis showed that the formulation of 7% butterfly pea flower with 2% gum arabic produced the lowest ΔE value (14.55), indicating the highest similarity to commercial cyan ink. Statistical analysis confirmed that butterfly pea flower concentration significantly influenced pH and color accuracy (p-value 0.05). This research successfully developed sustainable bio-ink with physicochemical characteristics approaching commercial ink standards, contributing to the development of environmentally friendly printing industry.

Abstract

The butterfly pea flower contains anthocyanins that function as natural pH indicators but are prone to fungal growth. This study aimed to investigate the effect of sodium benzoate concentration and storage duration on the response time of bio litmus paper made from butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) flower extract. Sodium benzoate was added as an antifungal agent at concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3%. Samples were stored for 0, 7, and 14 days, then tested for response time and fungal contamination. Results showed that only samples without sodium benzoate exhibited fungal growth after 14 days. Storage for 7–14 days improved response time efficiency. ANOVA analysis indicated that sodium benzoate concentration, storage duration, and their interaction significantly affected response time. This study demonstrates that sodium benzoate addition and proper storage can enhance the effectiveness and stability of butterfly pea-based bio litmus paper as a natural pH indicator.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of gum arabic composition on the solid content of organic ink made from sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan) as a natural dye. The study uses a quantitative method with an experimental approach. The main focus of this research is the solid content test, which is important for determining the quality and durability of organic inks. Variations of gum arabic were used as a binder in the ink formulation, with the tests conducted using screen printing on cotton combed fabric. The results indicate that the lower the composition of gum arabic used, the higher the solid content obtained. The ink with the lowest gum arabic composition (5 grams) produced the highest solid content at 78.79%, compared to 75.00% for 10 grams and 60.00% for 15 grams of gum arabic. Additionally, physical characteristics such as color intensity and viscosity were also influenced by the solid content, with darker colors and thicker textures observed as the solid content increased. These findings contribute to the development of more eco-friendly organic inks with improved stability and performance, supporting the sustainability trend in the printing industry.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji potensi rumput gajah (Pennisetum purpureum) sebagai bahan baku alternatif dalam pembuatan pulp untuk tisu ramah lingkungan. Proses dilakukan dengan metode pulping soda menggunakan larutan Na₂CO₃ pada tiga konsentrasi (10%, 12,5%, dan 15%) serta tiga waktu pemasakan (30, 45, dan 60 menit) pada suhu 70°C. Parameter yang diuji meliputi kadar pulp, uji mudah hancur, dan daya serap air sesuai dengan Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI 0103:2008). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan terbaik diperoleh pada konsentrasi Na₂CO₃ 10% dan waktu pemasakan 30 menit, dengan kadar pulp 79,19%, uji mudah hancur 73 detik, dan daya serap air 50 mm. Kombinasi ini memberikan keseimbangan optimal antara efisiensi delignifikasi dan integritas serat. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa rumput gajah berpotensi sebagai bahan baku tisu organik berkualitas tinggi yang ramah lingkungan.
