Abstract

This study, titled "Improving the Understanding of Grade IV Students with the PBL Method Assisted by Learning Videos at SDN 071060 Nias Regency," was motivated by the low level of student understanding that hindered effective learning outcomes. The research aimed to determine whether the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method supported by instructional videos could enhance students’ comprehension of subject matter. A Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach was implemented over two cycles, with each cycle comprising the stages of Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. Data were collected through observations and test results. In the first cycle, only 42.85% of students reached the "Proficient" category, indicating limited understanding. However, in the second cycle, there was a significant improvement, with 100% of the students attaining the "Proficient" level, demonstrating strong comprehension of the material presented. These findings suggest that the integration of PBL and learning videos can effectively improve learning outcomes, especially in enhancing students’ critical thinking and understanding. It is recommended that educators adopt the PBL method supported by visual learning aids such as videos to foster a more interactive and engaging learning experience. This approach can be a strategic alternative in overcoming students’ difficulties in grasping complex concepts and in promoting active participation in the classroom.

Abstract

Many students still struggle to express their opinions critically, which results in low participation in learning activities. Therefore, an ideal learning environment is needed through the transformation of instructional models. This study aims to explore the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model combined with interactive technology-based media, namely QuizWhizzer, in Catholic Religious Education. The research focuses on improving the critical thinking skills of Grade IX students at SMP Panca Setya 2 Sintang during the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The primary objective of this study is to determine whether the use of the PBL model assisted by QuizWhizzer can enhance students' critical thinking abilities. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles using observation and test instruments. The results of the second cycle showed that the integration of PBL and QuizWhizzer significantly encouraged student engagement, strengthened analytical thinking processes, and created an enjoyable and stimulating learning atmosphere. The average cognitive evaluation score increased from 76 in the first cycle to 83 in the second cycle. Therefore, innovation in teaching strategies and media is essential for improving the quality of education, especially in addressing the challenges of learning in the digital era.

Abstract

This study addresses the low level of student understanding in the Catholic Religious Education and Character subject (PAKBP) at SDN 013 Balikpapan Kota, as evidenced by learning evaluation results that did not meet the Minimum Mastery Criteria of Learning Objectives (KKTP). The lack of interactive learning models has limited student engagement, prompting the researcher to implement the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method, which emphasizes active problem-solving. The research focused on sixth-grade students and explored whether PBL could improve learning outcomes, particularly on the topic of the Church as the Communion of Saints. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection phases. The subjects were six sixth-grade students. Findings revealed significant improvements following the PBL implementation. In the first cycle, 83.3% of students achieved the “competent” category, while 16.7% were in the “proficient” category. Participation levels included 16.67% in “developing,” 50% in “competent,” and 33.33% in “proficient.” By the second cycle, student outcomes improved, with 66.7% reaching the “proficient” level and 33.3% attaining “advanced.” Active participation also rose, with 66.67% in “proficient” and 33.33% in “advanced.” These results demonstrate that the PBL method is effective in enhancing both learning outcomes and student engagement in Catholic Religious Education, especially in fostering deeper understanding of core religious concepts.

Abstract

The study entitled "Improving PAK Learning Outcomes with the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Model Assisted by Role Play Media for Phase B, Grade 4 Students of SDN 24 Sungai Uluk" was motivated by the low academic performance of students in the Catholic Religious Education and Character Education (PAKBP) subject. The aim of this research was to determine the extent to which the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model can enhance students’ learning outcomes in PAK. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two learning cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. In the first cycle, the lecture method was used, while in the second cycle, the PBL model was implemented, focusing on solving real-life problems commonly encountered by students. The PBL implementation in the second cycle was supported by role play media to improve students' comprehension and engagement. The assessment results from the end of the second cycle indicated an improvement in students' learning outcomes, and observations revealed increased student participation in the learning process. These findings suggest that the use of the PBL model assisted by role play media can be an effective alternative to enhance both the learning outcomes and active involvement of Grade 4 students in the PAK subject at SDN 24 Sungai Uluk.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the low level of understanding and internalization of Christian values among fourth grade students at Mardi Wiyata 2 Catholic Elementary School Malang in their daily lives, especially at school. This issue is reflected in the students’ lack of awareness of noble life values, such as belittling other living beings and being careless while playing, which could potentially endanger themselves and others. The purpose of this research is to improve students' understanding and internalization of Christian values through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which consists of two learning cycles. Data collection techniques include written tests and observations. In the first cycle, which used the interview method, students’ learning outcomes were low, with an average cognitive understanding of only 31.57% (6 students completed the lesson successfully, while 13 did not). After applying the PBL model in the second cycle, there was a significant improvement, with average understanding reaching 83.95% (all students completed successfully), showing a 52.38% increase. The internalization of Christian values also improved—from 45.20% in the first cycle to 93.42% in the second cycle—an increase of 48.22%, as shown by student behaviors more aligned with Christian values. The results of this study demonstrate that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model is effective in enhancing students’ understanding and internalization of Christian values.

Abstract

The study titled "Improving Understanding and Critical Thinking Skills Through a Reflection-Based PBL Model in Class X Phase E of SMA Tarakanita 1 Jakarta" aims to investigate the effectiveness of applying a reflection-based Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing students' understanding and critical thinking skills. The background of this study stems from the fact that students were still facing learning difficulties and lacked active participation in the learning process. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted over two cycles. Cycle I focused on the topic of the Role of the Holy Spirit, while Cycle II explored the concept of the Trinity. Each cycle followed the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection was carried out using observation sheets, interviews, questionnaires, and understanding tests. The results indicated a significant improvement in student learning outcomes. In Cycle I, students' understanding was categorized as moderate with an average score of 75. After revisions and the application of a more refined PBL model in Cycle II, the average score increased to 95, falling into the high category. Furthermore, students demonstrated enhanced critical thinking skills, particularly in analyzing, evaluating, and relating theological concepts to real-life experiences. The findings suggest that the reflection-based PBL model is effective in fostering both cognitive understanding and reflective thinking. The study concludes that this model can be a valuable approach in Catholic Religious Education, encouraging deeper engagement and understanding of faith teachings. It is recommended for broader implementation to support students in becoming more reflective, active, and insightful learners.

Abstract

This study was conducted at SMAN 2 Sengah Temila, where many students exhibited low literacy and numeracy skills, resulting in decreased learning motivation. To address this issue, the researcher implemented the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The objectives of the study were to determine: (1) the extent to which the PBL model improves students’ mutual cooperation attitudes; (2) the extent to which it enhances learning outcomes; and (3) the extent to which it increases learning mastery. This classroom action research (CAR) was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 25 students. Data collection techniques included tests, observations, and documentation, with data analyzed descriptively and presented in graphs and tables. In the first cycle, cognitive test results showed that 20% of students were categorized as very good, 36% good, 16% sufficient, and 28% developing. The target was 50% very good, 45% good, 5% sufficient, and 0% developing. In the second cycle, there was a significant improvement, with 72% of students achieving the very good category and 28% in the good category, surpassing the target of 70% and 30%, respectively. The sufficient and developing categories reached 0%, as targeted. The findings demonstrate that the PBL model effectively improves student learning outcomes and fosters cooperative attitudes, validating its use as a successful approach to achieving learning objectives in classrooms with low academic motivation.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low learning outcomes of students at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Gajah, particularly in the subject of Catholic Religious Education and Character Education. Therefore, a classroom action research (CAR) was conducted to determine the extent to which the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model could improve the learning outcomes of Grade XI Phase F students on the topic “Developing a Culture of Love.” The study was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. In the first cycle, the evaluation results showed that only 3 students (37.5%) achieved mastery learning, while 5 students (62.5%) had not. Based on these results, an improvement action was conducted in the second cycle. The outcome of the second cycle showed a significant increase, with all students (100%) successfully achieving mastery learning. These findings indicate that the implementation of the PBL model effectively improves student learning outcomes on the topic “Developing a Culture of Love.” Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model not only enhances student learning outcomes but also successfully achieves the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM) of 100% in Grade XI of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Gajah in the 2024/2025 Academic Year. The implementation of this method has proven effective and can serve as an alternative approach to improving the quality of Catholic Religious Education learning at the high school level.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted to address the lack of student motivation in Catholic Religious Education (PAK) subjects, which often leads to low academic achievement. The study aimed to determine whether the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model could improve students' learning motivation and academic performance, specifically in the topic "Involved in Environmental Conservation" for Grade V students (Phase C) at UPTD SD I Wue, Ngada, NTT. The research was conducted in two cycles, each comprising four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects consisted of 20 fifth-grade students. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. In the first cycle, where the lecture method was used, the motivation level was 48.7%. In the second cycle, after implementing the PBL method, student motivation increased significantly to 94.5%. The findings showed that PBL effectively enhances learning motivation through improvements in enthusiasm, active participation in discussions, the ability to express opinions, and students' awareness of environmental preservation as an expression of faith. These results confirm that the PBL model fosters a more engaging and contextual learning experience, making it an effective approach in PAK education to build students’ moral and spiritual awareness of environmental issues. Therefore, PBL can be recommended as an alternative strategy to enhance learning motivation and faith-based understanding in Catholic Religious Education.
