Abstract

This study was conducted on Kawei Island, Raja Ampat Regency, Southwest Papua Province, focusing on the geochemical characteristics of laterite nickel profiles in the concession area of PT. Kawei Sejahtera Mining (KSM) is a laterite nickel mining company. The study aims to analyze the geochemical characteristics of laterite nickel profiles using field observation methods and X-ray fluorescence (XRF)--based geochemical analysis of 16 laterite zone samples. The results of the analysis show that the laterite nickel deposit profile of Block A consists of overburden, limonite zone, saprolite, and bedrock with varying thicknesses, reaching 16 meters. Geochemical characteristics show an increase in Ni, Fe, Co, MnO, CaO, and Al₂O₃ elements from the bedrock zone to the overburden, while MgO and SiO₂ levels decrease. Nickel levels increase from the overburden to the limonite and saprolite zones but decrease in the bedrock zone.

Abstract

Administratively the research area is in Wasegi and surrounding area which located in Prafi District, Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia. The research goal is to understand the geology of Wasegi as well as the minerals resources potential. The methods that used are geological mapping and petrography of the rock samples. The area consists of three geomorphology units; fluvial-land unit, ripples denudation mount unit, and parallels denudation mount unit, in the juvenile to mature stadia. The stratigraphy of the research area is start from the oldest to the youngest; Kemum Schist, Maruni Crystalline Limestone, Lembai Diorite Intrusion Unit, and Pebbles - Clay Sediment. The geological structure that developed in the research area is shear joint structures on Northwest to East Southeast direction at Kemum Schist and Lembai Diorite Intrusion Unit. The possible resources of the research area that could be developed are sedimentation materials such as diorite, pebbles, and sand for building materials as well as the river sedimentation that the locals used in search for gold.

Abstract

Generaly geothermal is a manifestation of earth heat which accumulated since earth formed. In nature the heat generate what is called geothermal system. One of main aspect of a geothermal system is geothermal reservoir. The reservoir functions as water container that will be heated by heat sources or occupied by vapor that already generated deep down the earth. One of the physical property of geothermal reservoir rock is permeability. The permeability is the rock property to allow fluids to flow through the interconnected pores within the rock which will control the productivity of the reservoir. A good permeability allows quantities of water get into the reservoir that will increased the vapor/hot water discharge.
