Abstract

The phrase "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" from Psalm 22 is one of the most poignant and widely recognized lines in the Bible, carrying profound significance in both Christian and Jewish traditions. In this paper, we explore its meaning within the context of Psalm 22 and its later connection to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. While Psalm 22 is often seen as an expression of human suffering, its quotation by Jesus on the cross (Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34) is pivotal for Christians, symbolizing his identification with humanity's anguish. For Christians, Jesus' cry is not only a personal expression of agony but also a reflection of his role as the sacrificial Lamb of God, who takes upon himself the sins of humanity. This connection underscores both the depths of human suffering and the hope of redemption. Additionally, Psalm 22 captures the tension between despair and trust, lament and hope, ultimately serving as a reminder of God's faithfulness and redemptive love, culminating in the victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ. This article contributes to theological scholarship by offering a comprehensive exegetical and Christological interpretation of Psalm 22, highlighting its prophetic connection to Jesus’ crucifixion and its significance in understanding divine abandonment and redemptive suffering.
