Abstract

The poem Matinya Juara Judi by Sitor Situmorang is a critical portrait of the social life of society, especially regarding moral decadence, family crisis, and the construction of pseudo-heroism. Through Ian Watt's sociology of literature approach, which emphasizes the relationship between literary works and the social reality of the society in which they were born, the poem reflects complex social dynamics. The character “Juara Judi” in the poem symbolizes a masculine figure who is glorified for his worldly skills such as gambling, hunting, dancing, and sculpting, but on the other hand reflects a total failure in carrying out social and family functions. The character's life is filled with power and fear, but does not present kindness or exemplary values. The method in this research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection technique is done with note-taking technique. The data source is the poem Matinya Juara Judi by Sitor Situmorang. The data analysis technique is done by describing and analyzing the portrait of social life in society and family. Overall, the poem Matinya Juara Judi by Sitor Situmorang is a reflection of the social conditions of a society filled with family conflicts, patriarchal domination, and deviant behavior. Furthermore, the poem also describes the negative consequences of the gambling and drinking habits of the main character
