Abstract

The term "golput" (short for "golongan putih" or "white group") refers to individuals or groups who are eligible to vote in elections but choose not to exercise their voting rights at polling stations on election day. The 2020 Denpasar Mayoral Election was one of the local elections characterized by a low voter turnout. Approximately 46% of registered voters did not cast their votes, indicating a high rate of abstention (golput) during the election. Voter participation is a crucial element in the implementation of elections, as political participation serves as a form of public oversight over the government led by the elected regional head. This study employs a library research approach, utilizing secondary data sources drawn from various literatures, including scholarly articles, online news reports, academic journals, and official documentation from the Denpasar City General Election Commission (KPU), accessed via the internet. The findings reveal that the rise in golput indicates growing political apathy among the public. The high level of abstention must be addressed through well-designed strategies implemented by the KPU in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
