Abstract

Textbooks are essential in the teaching and learning process, offering structured guidance to achieve the goals of language learners. This study aimed to evaluate the English textbook "English for Nusantara" for the seventh grade year students of Junior High School, published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, within the context of Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, the content of the textbook was analyzed based on BSNP (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan) criteria to assess its relevance and suitability for young learners. Findings reveal that the textbook meets most BSNP standards, making it a suitable resource for teaching English at the junior high school level. However, several areas could benefit from further enhancement, particularly in content depth and cultural representation, to better support language acquisition and engagement. This study highlights the importance of continuous content evaluation to align educational materials with evolving curriculum standards.

Abstract

Language shows a significant part in social interaction, not only as a means of communication but likewise as a medium to express identity, emotion, and perspective. One of the pragmatic features that reveals how language relates to context is deixis. This research purposes to examine the categories and functions of deixis in the lyrics of “Die With a Smile”, a collaborative song by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research focused on identifying and categorizing deictic expressions based on Levinson’s (1983) and Yule’s (1996) typology: person, spatial, and temporal deixis. The data were collected through documentation and examined through content examination to interpret the contextual implication of each deictic term. The findings revealed a total of 30 deictic expressions in the lyrics, dominated by personal deixis with 22 occurrences (73.33%), mainly through the pronoun “I.” Temporal deixis, such as “tomorrow” and “last night,” added emotional depth, while spatial deixis like “the world” and “wherever” conveyed abstract or symbolic locations. These deixes not only clarified the speaker’s intentions but also strengthened the emotive linking between the vocalist and listener. The study contributes to pragmatic linguistic analysis in music by highlighting how deixis shapes meaning and perspective. However, the study is inadequate to a single song and three types of deixis. Future studies are encouraged to analyze other songs, genres, or types of deixis, as well as explore multimodal elements such as music video visuals to increase a more inclusive thoughtful of meaning construction in popular music

Abstract

This study analyzed the efficiency of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) using the application named Cake in improving the students’ reading comprehension skills at SMPN 1 Pucuk. A quantitative method using a pre-experimental design of one group pretest-posttest was used. Thirty eighth graders having problems with their reading comprehension participated in this study. The data collected was obtained through administering reading comprehension tests to the students both before and after the administration of treatment. The data collected was then analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and paired sample t-test through the use of the Jamovi software. From the descriptive statistics, there was a remarkable improvement in the performance of the students in terms of reading with their average scores increasing from 46.1 to 86.4. There was also evidence of normal distribution of data (W=0.974, p=0.654). Moreover, the output obtained from conducting paired sample t-test on the scores obtained before the treatment and after the treatment was significantly different (t(29) = -23.5; p < .001). The finding indicates that the impact of the treatment in enhancing the reading skills of the subjects was significantly significant. Based on the findings, the Cake App can be considered as a MALA for enhancing the reading skills among junior high school students
