Abstract

Background of Study: Student dropout in higher education is influenced by a variety of factors including demographic, socioeconomic, macroeconomic, admission-related, and academic performance data. Accurately identifying students at risk of dropping out is a significant challenge within educational data mining (EDM), especially when working with large, complex datasets.Aims and Scope of Paper: This study aims to identify an optimal subset of features that can improve the accuracy of student dropout prediction. The scope includes comparing the effectiveness of different machine learning algorithms combined with a heuristic-based feature selection method to find the best-performing model.Methods: A Wrapper-based feature selection approach was employed using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) as the search strategy. ACO was integrated with five classifiers—Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Neural Network (NN)—to select the most relevant feature subsets. The performance of each combination was evaluated and compared.Result: The study found that ACO combined with Random Forest (ACO-RF) outperformed the other combinations in feature selection effectiveness. The selected features were then validated using various machine learning algorithms and a neural network. Among them, the neural network achieved the highest accuracy of 93%.Conclusion: The proposed ACO-RF wrapper method is an effective feature selection strategy for predicting student dropout in higher education. The method enhances model performance, especially when used with neural networks, and offers a promising approach for early identification of at-risk students.

Abstract

Introduction: To study the ocular changes in patients on long term treatment with Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ); and detect means for early detection of toxicity.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study at a tertiary care hospital, in which 100 patients, male and female, aged 35 years or more, taking HCQ for 5 years or more were included. Patients with any known ocular or systemic diseases were not included. Indication, dosage, duration and cumulative dose of HCQ intake were recorded. History of ocular symptoms, visual acuity, colour vision, complete ophthalmic examination, visual field using Amsler grid and 10-2 Humphrey’s automated fields (HVF), Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT), colour fundus photography, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) were recorded. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis.Result: 15% of the study population showed signs of HCQ related ocular toxicity. 17%, 21% and 10% patients had abnormal SD-OCT, HVF and FAF findings respectively.Conclusion: HCQ related ocular toxicity has been found in patients in the absence of symptoms. Objective tests like HVF, SD- OCT and FAF were more useful in early detection of toxicity than subjective tests such as Amsler grid, colour vision and FFA.

Abstract

Introduction: Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a common ocular disease which can be responsible for significant ocular morbidity in the adult population. It is most commonly associated with lifestyle diseases especially hypertension in older age groups, but may have a variety of etiologies including genetically inherited disorders. Case report: A 27-year-old female patient presented to our out patient department (OPD) with history of diminished vision in left eye of 03 days duration. The patient gave history of contracting dengue fever three weeks prior to the onset of symptoms. On evaluation she was found to have CRVO of the left eye with no macular edema. The patient was investigated for other causes of CRVO and was found to have mildly reduced serum homocysteine and deranged serum iron studies. The patient was managed conservatively with good visual recovery and is presently on follow up for early detection of complications for CRVO. Discussion: The patient presented with multiple etiologies of CRVO, however, each was subclinical in nature. Conservative management for ocular symptoms along with treatment of systemic deficiencies by the physician lead to good visual outcome and generalized well being of the patient. Conclusion: CRVO is being increasingly seen in the younger age group. Multiple etiologies may need to be ruled out, along with lifestyle diseases which are on an incline in the younger population. Close follow up with treatment is required to detect complications early, and provide a good visual outcome. To our knowledge, this is the third reported case of CRVO related to dengue fever.
